How much alcohol can you really bring back?

Is it just me (happy to be wrong for OPs sake) but wouldn't the duty free allowance of each country you pass through come into effect ? Unless you are transiting they will assume you intend to 'land' the goods in their country for consumption / sale, etc. and may not just assume you will take it out again for transport back to Australia.

At least while in the EU you wont technically cross a 'border' but the US ?

Anyway, worth thinking about.

That is, indeed, another reason why I've given up.

Sure, USA can be a wrinkle where I think the DF limit is 1 litre, but on one trip, where my target grog was Romanian (bottle of red and bottle of white), I then flew to Vienna, then Venice (disembark) trains in Italy until flying to Zurich; onto Amsterdam (disembark); onto LHR (disembark and where at least I shed an equal weight in books!!), then Russia (disembark), Frankfurt, Singapore and home!

Everything safe and sound (well, maybe a compromise on quality, but I let it all settle for about 4 months or so).

With 2 bottles you are pretty much OK most places, LOTFAP excepted.
