How much luggage can I bring on a Qantas dash 8 flight connecting to an international flight?

So the first leg of my flight is on a dash 8 (1x 22kg) and I connect to an international flight (30kg). So normally the baggage allowance on my international flight would apply to the domestic one but on the qantas website it says that dash 8’s are an exception. I’m planning to bring 2 pieces weighing 15kg each which should be fine for the international flight, will I be ok for the dash 8 flight?

I never had an issue checking in at least 2x23 kg on dash 8 with intl connections. I have one booked, and the qantas app says 2x32kg in fact (for wp).

For me, on the app, it says 30kg checked baggage at the top but then if I go through the individual flights it says 23kg x1 for the dash 8 and 30kg for the international. Which is why I’m confused

You'll be ok, they go on the International flight limits. I've done the run several times from Canberra to London and back, starting off with a Dash 8 to get to Sydney, and then back again to Canberra.

It probably depends a little on the departure airport,the check in agent and your status. Flying from Tasmania domestically with my BA gold in the booking I regularly had 2 x 20KG bags without any problem but once from Geraldton had a problem but fortunately another locum was going to spend a weekend in Perth so he checked in the second bag for me. But again this was an all domestic flight. You shouldn't have a problem.

If you're transferring from a Qantas domestic to a Qantas international flight, or vice versa, on the same calendar day*, the international baggage allowance is accepted on both flights. Present both tickets when checking your baggage in.

I too have done lots of overseas flights leaving CBR on a Dash 8. There has never been any issue at all with luggage for international flights - even when the CBR-SYD leg has been on a totally separate ticket.

If flying out of CBR, the first flight of some days, are on a 717.

One thing to remember is that your carry on luggage into the cabin is strictly limited. If deemed too big it will be taken from you at the plane door and given back to you at the arrival port.

This might be an issue if your passport etc is in it and you rightly consider that you must hold it at all times.

International Limits apply, although as others said if Carry-On is too large it'll be taken and placed in the belly.

I would recommend sticking the passport in the pocket or a coat in case.

Have done this more times than I can count and have never ever had a problem in any QF regional port. I’ve taken the kitchen sink (unfortunately) a few times, never an issue.

The only issue with hand luggage when travelling on a dash 8 is the size of the bag. If it is too big, they just take it from you at the gate/bottom of the stairs and give you a ticket - they call it premium hand luggage. You then collect it on arrival on the tarmac immediatEly as it comes off the plane. Then you go to the usual luggage carousel to collect your checked baggage.

I have routinely boarded a Dash 8 connecting flight SYD-CBR after international with a bag or two of duty free, a winter coat and scarf, a handbag/tote bag and either a rolly suitcase or a ski boot bag, plus a ski helmet. They have only ever cared about the rolly suitcase or ski boot bag - and these usually just go into the hold.

as posters @Hvr and @HS-TQE have mentioned up thread about your passport maybe ending up in the hold, know this in advance and have your passport, money and computer (if you care) in a pocket or a bag that won’t go into the hold.

On the qantas website it says that if my ticket only has a baggage allowance in only kg then I can bring as many pieces as long as the combined weight is under 30kg. But the dash 8 flight has a number attached to it aswell (1x23kg) so can I still check in 2 pieces of luggage?

I am pretty sure everyone in this thread understood, and many, including myself, have definitly traveled with much more than 2x23 kg checked baggages on a dash8, with or without international connections, inbond and outbound.

The key thing when you've got an international trip involving connecting sectors, and some of those sectors are domestic or heaven forbid on an ATR, is to always refer to the trip in its entirety and not sector by sector. So if you're flying say Canberra to Cape Town (via Sydney) you'd say Canberra to Cape Town and not refer to the Canberra to Sydney sector. This clears everything up for everyone. Particularly in the US where you have to recheck baggage or enter a lounge and they think you're doing a domestic trip based on a single boarding pass. I can't tell you the number of times, I've flown United as a Premier Gold and had lounge agents tell me, "you can't come in" before me showing that international boarding pass for the connecting flight.

This is a good point. I would have anything you want for the first leg on top so you can grab it out and be prepared to have it gate checked.

Keep your passport on your person

As long as the Dash 8 flight is part of the same ticket you will definitely have no problems getting whatever the luggage limit applies to your international flight. My best axample is LA to Canberra with a points upgrade to business and I'm gold status. I took 3 x 30 kg bags (which was my permitted allowance on the LA to Sydney leg). Not an issue on the Dash 8. Not so sure if they were separate bookings but it should still be OK - maybe then worst case you only get the standard international allowance but it will be at least that. If they are separate bookings and there is a stopover involved - hmm not sure about that.

No need for same ticket / booking, they explicitly say you have your international allowance on the domestic flight as long as it's a same day transfer. I've done this many times - and yes you get the increased status allowance too.

If the flight is on a different day and different bookings, then you're out of luck.
