Yesterday I received an invitation to pay for lounge access before an upcoming flight. Now I won't be taking up that invitation, because I have status with a partner airline that grants me access, but I don't think I would, particularly with 2 of us travelling ...

It is a top tier lounge at SIN, with tarmac views, showers, self serve champagne (real stuff), and a range of hot and cold food (including at times steak or lamb chops), soup, desserts and cheese selection.

I’d definitely not pay that at the start of a trip.

But by the time I’ve lurched punchy & annoyed out of my 8.5hrs in The Tube Of Death, and was facing a showerless 3hrs of killing time before being wedged back into The Tube Of Death for another 13hrs or so, who knows what silly decisions I might make?!

I wouldn't pay that for any lounge -- even a F one. In Singapore it is absolutely unnecessary too. The terminals are very comfortable.

Here we are debating if the cost is to high yet there are others on this site who likely spend $1000’s chasing status for free lounge access.
True, but for 12+months access for potentially dozens of trips for pax plus guest. Not $270 for 3 to 4 hours.

USD100 (SGD137) has been the going rate at the non DXB lounges since EK started selling access.
I always imagined it was pitched at that price to a) make it worth their while and b) maintain some exclusivity by discouraging the riffraff.

Edit: Not suggesting fellow posters are riffraff.

If i've got 8.5 hrs plus 3 hrs then another 13hrs i'm going to do an overnight stay at a airport hotel not a 2.5 hour stint in an overpriced club lounge

I only overheard this as I was waiting by the desk to get a dental kit, but I'm pretty sure a family of 4 was quoted $NZ40 per person to get into the AKL lounge about a year ago. Kids were both under 6 or 7. I remember thinking that was steep, though it was about 5 hours to the DXB flight.

Can't explain that, but I've seen similar at BKK where a group declined to pay the THB3000++ asking price.

Well,
(a) overnight stay for 2.5 hours is any better than 2.5 hours in an overpriced club lounge? Note that this rhetorical question is brought to you by someone who has been in only one EK lounge and is hence completely unaware that no person with mere human abilities of deduction can tell the difference between any of the EK lounges around the world (excepting AKL where the potato bake has bacon!), and
(b) after 8.5hrs in Y, logic means nothing & I’m just as likely to start trying to eat the carpet ...

A few hotels in Bangkok have offered me executive lounge access for THB1500++ each per night. No thanks. I can get a lot of food and drink for that price.

no thanks, thats too much.
rather have a PP membership, their lounges range from excellent to enough to escape the hustle & bustle of the terminal with some snacks/drinks included.

no wonder that DXB business lounge or AUH looks like an overcrowded Bazaar!
did them a few times never again-if you are not actually traveling on business or first class you shouldn't be allowed into those lounges in the first place-after all you pay 3-4 times more for a business or first class ticket and the " ground experience" should be a big part of the whole trip-not ruined by nomads with 6 kids flying on economy like most people do in DXB who buys their way in as to them 135 $ is cheap.

Wow, at that price you could rent a hotel room or day room in many locations.

For a little bit more than that per visit price (AUD150 per annum) get a Diners card and get unlimited access to lounges in hundreds of lounges throughout the world as many times as you need for free!

I don't drink expensive champers. Just looking for clean shower, wifi, comfort food and a drink or two.

I have paid for lounge before but for 2 x people, I would prefer to pay for a airport or transit hotel and get some privacy, nap and shower. Doing this at Changi with a 4hr transit - I dont need more food and drink, I need privacy and a shower.
I agree...I would use the transit lounge rather than airline lounge...about the same price and you can relax much better and sleep if you need to...S$137 - too much for what it's worth...I have stayed at many lounges round the world and many are overrated...

$30 AUD fair value.
AUD30 is not fair simply because that rate would make a lounge way too busy and lose what a lounge is meant to be, so unfair to many.
I'm thinking the rate quoted is to allow extra income whilst not overly distroying the experience. No way I'd pay it, though.
