How strict is QF?

I'll start by apologising for a question which would have been asked umpteen times previously, but for some reason the AFF search function does not seem to work up here in the PNG highlands......I have no idea why not.

Any way, I need to fly QF with hand luggage only due to a tight connection in MEL and I was wondering how strict QF are with hand luggage weights. My two bags fall under the size limits, but by the time I add 2 x 1L of grog, I'll be marginally over the weight limit (maybe a kg or two). I'd also like to fill my hard case with a little more than my soft case.....like to about 10kg.

Can anyone offer any recent insight into whether QF are lenient with hand luggage weights? (Flying J if that makes any difference).

Rarely checked, but every now and then they crackdown, but normally just results in a gate check.
If it looks like it fits a sizer then better chance

Of course, I can't guarantee anything, but IME if you make your HL look light (carry it like it weighs nothing) you won't have any issues. Particularly so of you OLCI so the first person you interact with (apart from security) is the person scanning your BP at the gate. The only time I recall having HL weighed on QF was at AKL when the other half insisted on putting it on a trolley. I suspected this would attract attention and it did, and my HL was eight point something when it should not have exceeded seven. All the check in agent did was advise me to watch out for the weighing dragons upstairs.

Domestic or International or both?

FWIW, Duty Free has no weight or volume as far as QF are concerned.

I've only once had my hand luggage weighed flying QF international, and that was in ZQN. Never for domestic flights. I think you should be okay as long as it's not obvious.

I think you should be OK. Along the lines of what Serfty said, carry the grog in a separate plastic bag, in fact carry as much as you can as 'personal items', but you would be very unlucky to be pinged. My single carry-on is frequently >7kg (my single luxury of consistent rule breaking) and never had an issue.

Never had hand luggage weighed ever on QF.
In fact the only time I have had it weighed is on Air Vanuatu, flying in a light aircraft to Tanna Island.
Unless there is something about it which attracts attention, I doubt you will have an issue.
But some people at work fly to and from PNG regularly, so I will ask them tomorrow and reply again.

Thanks for all the answers. I do very much appreciate it for such a basic question!

The flights are domestic tomorrow and my international leg (where I pick up the grog) is today. Thanks for the tip about the duty free being weight/volume "free" as well. That'll put me right about on the nose with the legal weight! Cheers.
