My daughter and I want to visit Europe next December/January. As I have previously mentioned on this forum, I can’t fly at night. I have been doing some preliminary searching as to how I can get to Europe without any overnight flights. Not doing too well so far. I was wondering if anyone has the same daytime flight requirements as I do, and if they had found a solution. Dave Noble, I am sure you will have some good ideas.
I want to leave Perth on 18/12/2010 and possibly fly into Rome. Then to return from London and be back in Perth by 26/01/2011. I can cope with non daytime arrivals, but the time has to be before midnight in the departure city. Either one or two nights between flights would be fine. I would even contemplate business class, if the price was good.

1) You cannot leave Europe to get to Asia without some part of the flight being in darkness; 12 hour flight and its 8 hours time zone shift.

One option;

PER-SIN day stop;
SIN-LHR day stop; SQ318
LHR-SIN stop (going to be overnight)
SIN-PER day

Potentially worth considering going around the world .. I *think* you can continue to fly in daylight so long as you keep flying west.

Bundy Bear, it isn’t flying in darkness that is the problem. It is flying past midnight on my body clock. For instance, if I could find a 12 hour flight from London that left at, say, 8am, it would only be 8pm by my body clock on arrival in Asia. Even though it may be close to morning local time.
Notzac, I hadn’t thought of a round the world ticket as a possibility. Thank you for that interesting suggestion. I would, however, prefer the shortest flying time as well as no overnight flights.

It's possible, from my knowledge, to get to London as "day" flights, with a overnight stop somewhere in Asia. But the return will be problematic, as far as I'm aware, the flights leave about midday, which then overnights and arrives early morning in Asia, or else they leave in the evenings, arriving in Asia late afternoon.

Another option on the return, is via India/Sri Lanka. I flew from Mumbai to Perth via Hong Kong, but it's a 4 AM flight from mumbai, and getting to Mumbai arrives shortly past midnight.

The other option is to have several hops, eg LHR -> Jordan (AMM), then pick up another flight to east asia before returning to perth would be my guess.

One option is to go RTW, there are day flights from London to the US, but you may have troble with getting across the Pacific, unless you stop over in honolulu, then go on to Sydney (QF/JQ)

Try the following routing:
PER->SYD->HKG->LHR->somewhere in europe->LHR->JKF//LGA/EWR->HNL->SYD->PER. This can be done using all "day" flights, leaving in the morning (7-9ish). If you fly direct from NYC to HNL, you'll need to leave from a different airport, but you can do JFK->LAX->HNL, with a stop over in LAX. HNL->SYD are not every day. This is a RTW ticket, so you have another 7 flights, 4 in Europe and 3 in the US, included in the price (ex taxes/charges)

CX have day flights across the pacific ex-YVR, JFK & SFO - PER as well as afternoon/evning flight from HKG-PER.

Also, Emirates may be an option - they have a *long* day flight back from DXB (dep 1045/ arr 0115) as well as a day flight (if you don't count getting to the airport for a 6am departure) to DXB

It is quite possible to do it by day from Perth to Rome ( or London) without an overnight stop, though need a stop on way back

Out of Perth , EK has a departure at 0600 which arrives into DXB at 1255 (EK425)

Continuing on to Rome on EK95 at 1505 arrving at 1835. If going to London EK9 connects on to LGW

Seems a wonderfully civilised way to go and planning to use a similar flight ex Sydney to London in June

Coming back from London to Australia , it isnt possible to do the whole thing by day without stopping over unfortunately.

The best I suggest is to fly LGW-DXB on day 1.

take EK12 0945 from Gatwick arriving into DXB at 2035
then take EK424 at 10:45 the next day to Perth which arrives into Perth at 0115

Similar can be done from LHR is wanting to suffer using LHR

Heading Westerly is your best bet. Dave Noble has indicated the first part; on the return you might employ a multi stop strategy.

e.g.
  • Fly Rome to London/New York/Chicago
  • then to Dallas/Los Angeles/Denver/San Francisco
  • then to Honolulu
  • then to Sydney
  • then to Perth
All can be done with daylight flights. Note there appear to be no scheduled mainline flights West Coast USA to Australia/New Zealand that operate during daylight hours only.

In the latest Age travel section there was a mention of a tour next year that replicates the original Qantas flight from Sydney to London - something like 17 days of travel, with no more than 4 hours per day in the air. Presumably that would all be in daylight :)

IIRC, it was also around $18k one way ;)

I saw it in a QF magazine. If I had the cash, it would be an awesome thing to do!

...But only if it was in an Empire class Flying Boat!!!

(OK.. twist my arm... A Lancastrian would do at a pinch...)

BA have a daytime LHR-AUH (dep ~9am, arr ~7pm local time, flight time ~7hrs)

- so a connecting AUH-SIN or AUG-HKG daytime flight might be a possibility to then connect on a daytime to Aus (what time does JQ go SIN-DRW?)

That would need an overnight stop anyway.

I still think that EK are the best option for providing what is desired and likely for a decent price

Not sure about your particular case but assuming your body clock would have adjusted to UK or Europe time zone by then? Dave Noble's suggestion of flying with EK would work for you as arrving in PER at 0115 would only be mid to late afternoon in the UK.

Once again, I have received some very interesting and useful advice from this forum.

I think the Emirates suggestion seems to work best for me. And my daughter doesn’t care as long as the fare isn’t too expensive. We would stay overnight in Dubai in each direction.

I am keen to work out the best itinerary and airline as I want to be ready when and if Emirates has a good price over Christmas. It is a terrible time to look for a good deal but our travel dates pretty inflexible.

A friend also suggested I try Singapore airlines and it could also be a possibility, especially if I fly out of Manchester.

Many thanks once again.
