How to impress a flight attendant

I give them just after I board. I'm in row 1 so generally I hand them to the FA who gives me my pre-flight beverage.

As to the sharing... Given the number of FA's from other cabins who come by and say thanks... I think it is safe to say they are shared around.

I wasn't sure about this. But having met BR. Thought why not. I didn't make a big fuss, just gave the chocolates to the FA handing me my drink , and said thanks.
I was visited by the entire Cabin crew during the flight to say thank you.
I was a little embarrassed as I thought the gesture was small.
The interesting thing is , when + 1 did it when flying solo. Not the same response. Not sure why. But when we are together it is really appreciated.
I enjoy it they enjoy it, and more joy in the world can't be a bad thing

BR - Do you find this works well on short flights when FA's are usually very busy throughout the flight duration?

I give them on every commercial flight regardless of the length.

Even on short hops they are appreciated. The same cabin crew can fly several different sectors on the same aircraft on a single day so they generally have enough time to have a chocolate or 2.

I generally travel J but assiduously seek points upgrades to F, especially on QF A380 services. The upgrade gods have smiled much more often than not (only 1 miss - suck that Princess Fiona, if you're in this thread ), and I've usually been in 1A. I guess the thing that concerns me is that I would look sycophantic if I whipped out the choccy pack.

I always say 'please' and 'thank you' and always engage the staff to call me 'John' not 'Mr M*'. I often have made a point of saying to the CSM that 'X' FA is just phenomenal (I recall one very young FA who had been put into F LAX-SYD who was very nervous, but OMG she TRIED so hard I'm sure she would not have believed me if I said it did not show). The CSM was in full agreement with my praise that 'X' was a natural for F but said that the FA really wanted to work in whY.

I always walk off the a/c with plenty of great interaction with the crew.

Sorry, but I just don't know how else to express my appreciation without looking sycophantic .

I would love to be able to impress some of the flight attendants I have come across in my life time but sadly though I have had the chance already and I blew it....

There are those (some on AA come to mind) that are beyond impressing .

One does not have to be a sycophant when doing something pleasant for another person. Possibly it can be done just because you are a decent human being. YMMV and enjoy shopping at Aldi and sponsoring children.

Sorry if you thought my tongue-in-cheek comment was directed at you. From what I read on AFF, you could never be described as a sycophant.

And I must come clean - I don't buy my chocolate at Aldi!

Chocolates aside, I use to be in a relationship with a Flight Attendant (For quite a while, actually.), so I learnt a thing or two about how to impress then.

Despite appearances to the contrary FAs are not actually there to serve. I want to impress them, because if it ever comes to them doing their real job, I want them to save my life - preferably first.

I think medhead has brought up an important point - the reason that FAs are there is for Emergency Procedures.

That said, I now have a box of Belle Fleur chocolates ready for QF63 to JNB next Tuesday.

Does it not seem like its a bit of a bribe giving them to them before take-off? It's like saying - 'right, before we start, here is chocolate so I expect to receive everything'.

Not to be negative but you cant really thank someone for doing something before they do it because they may not do it. What if they then give you terrible service? They're being rewarded for that?

I would have thought giving it out shortly before landing (and only for those flights where the service was good) would be more appropriate?

It would depend why you're doing it. Are you doing it because you're trying to buy good service, or are you doing it because you want to do something nice for them?

Bossreggie - I would be fascinated to know how you have managed what you have in your life. You have said you had a very simple upbringing and I am guessing that you are now extremely wealthy given the amount of J and F travel you do. I believe you are in property development (?) but would love to know your story of how you got there!?!

This thread has made me think. I have never thought to give the flight staff anything, which is strange as I tend to do similar recognition things in most other aspects of my life. I have had some not-so-fun jobs in my life and it gives me great pleasure to now be able to bring a little spark into the lives of others. I cant work out why I have never thought to do similar on planes! I have always treated flight crew well, and have been the recipient of a few gifts from them, so I must be an OK passenger! But now I will remember to do something on my next flight. Not sure that it will be chocolates, as I like to be different, but not sure what. Is there some sort of protocol here? Chocolates are very safe and neutral, so maybe they are the most appropriate. BR, is there a history/etiquette in this area?

I have not had that many AA flights but have come across some really nice looking AA flight attendants. They are not all boilers. Not sure what they would be like on a date though as I have never got that far.

Not on my flights this week ;)

Or perhaps I'm just not old enough to appreciate them :)
