Hoping for some advice based on your experiences.

My wife and I have been collecting QFF points slowly over the last 5 yrs or so. Having done a few trips and spent too much on the credit card we now have amassed 325,000 between us. We are planning a trip to the UK early next year – probably in the cold of February – and will be taking our three year old and then 5 month old with us. It is only now that I am looking at redeeming the points through the Classic rewards scheme of course I realize that it is stil going to cost us a lot to go despite the points saved.

We can “borrow” some points from my parents (aprx 60,000) so we have enough to cover both of us and our three year old (it seems he requires the same number of points as an adult fare) and then pay for the baby. Doing this will still cost us about $3,200 in total (ie tax + baby’s fare). It also looks like the routes offered are not direct and will involve a 4 / 5 hour stop over somewhere – we’d rather grit our teeth and go straight through. I can’t work out how we’d make the booking anyway though even if we were to do this – you don’t seem to be able to make a paid booking at the same time and you can’t just book baby fare on it’s own without an adult. Any advice on how to do this?

In view of the cost though and the indirect route I have actually considered cashing in the points and getting Westfield vouchers and booking through Flight Centre on a cheaper flight (Virgin, Singapore, Malaysia). Our points, with borrowing the folks again, would net us about $2,500 in vouchers – I’ve seen Singapore fares at $5,500 so the total spend would be $3,000.

It seems madness for a loyalty scheme that I can get a better deal with the points flying on a different airline.

Has anyone gone the voucher/Flight Centre path before or offer any advice on getting a better deal somehow with Qantas?

Thanks

Can you transfer your points to any other airlines directly? I've redeemed with Virgin Atlantic flying club in the past - good direct routing via HKG. May also be worth transferring to Virgin Australia (Velocity) for use on a VA / Etihad flights.

Also, check out the current Virgin Atlantic sale that's on. The fares looked pretty competitive to me, not sure if it works for your dates.

Welcome to AFF Paul. :D

Vouchers redemptions tend to give very poor value.

Points cannot be transferred away from the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.

FWIW, 140,000 points is enough for an around the work trip in economy class.
