Hi all,

I am new here so please excuse me if this sounds like a dumb question:

My wife and myself are flying Singapore to Brisbane on QF052 on 27 Jul. We are currently booked in economy but are interested in upgrading to business. I am currently a Bronze Qantas club member and have only accumulated enough points to upgrade one of us to business class (i.e on the Qantas website it tells me I need 80,000 points to upgrade both of us to business, but I only have a little over 40,000 points).

What is my best course of action? I assume I should ask Qantas if I can pay the extra on one ticket (probably my own to get the better Status credits) and use the points to request a upgrade for my wife? Any other suggestions?

Should I request this earlier rather than later or as I am only a Bronze take my chances when I get to the Qantas Club/check-in in Singapore?

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to AFF!

A tricky one, but you can't actual pay to upgrade to business from economy without cancelling your economy booking an making a new booking, QF doesn't allow mixed class bookings in Business (J) and Economy (whY), you would need to buy two separate one-way tickets.

If you did that, there would also be a chance your wife's upgrade may not come through meaning you may be in business and she will be down the back. QF can note the booking to say that the bookings are joined, but there is no guarantee.

As for asking at Qantas club (QP), you can't request upgrades for international travel from the club, it must be done more than 24 hours before the flight via the website or phone.

My advice would be to save up the points for another trip....otherwise could be an expensive one way upgrade.

Qantas does permit and in fact actively sells mixed class fares, however these are not sold online, unless you are redeeming QFF points for an award !

Hi markis10, thanks for the reply. I don't really understand what you are talking about in your reply - does it help me out at all?

Not really, its possible that you could redo your ticketing and pay for Business class fare, but as mentioned you cannot pay an upgrade fee nor can you upgrade using points at the airport. Upgrades with QF are done on a status and time basis when it comes to points, the sooner you put your upgrade request in the better but if you are both on the same booking I dont think its possible if you dont have enough points for both.

Thanks markis10, I guess have only tried to do this once the booking was made and was told can't be done by Q, they also told me they only sell mixed class in Economy and Premium Economy from Australia, and only over the phone, maybe they were leading me astray on the business fare options.... i would love to buy mixed Y and J fares from Australia any hints on how to do it?

Thank-you both for your help. I'm not sure why Qantas has to make it so difficult, it seems simple in my head to just pay an extra amount to upgrade. Cancelling and re-booking seems stupid (and to hard) to me.

Because they would say why didn't you just buy a J ticket in the first place? And if they did they would never offer it for less than the difference between the full difference between your whY ticket and a fully flex J ticket which would be a massive cost difference particularly for one way.Otherwise it devalues the product and some people would think oh I can just pay to upgrade at the QP.
