hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

How long from approval do you receive the card? Iirc someone posted somewhere that you can add the card to Apple Pay before receiving the physical card. Have an upcoming expense that I would like to pay with the card!
Yes, you can

i got mine late last year and the approval email said that you can add it to your phone wallet from the HSBC App which I did. Limit of $3000 until you receive & activate the physical card. Hopefully this is a step in the direction of not having to wait for the physical card at all.

Hi there, I received an email on 30th Dec from star alliance confirming that I was eligible for gold status based on the HSBC credit card promotion. I followed the link in the email to select Singapore airline as my status airline. I got a call today from Singapore airline to tell me that my Gold Status will not be upgraded to Gold until the 12 month anniversary of the Credit Card opening. I then looked up the T&Cs and see in the FAQs attached that as part of the welcome offer, status upgrade would be in 10 days. Did anyone else have this problem or can anyone give me some help please? Thanks everyone!
Looks like SQ didn't read their Ts&Cs properly. Let us know if they honour the Ts&Cs please. It's kinda in black & white, hard for them to argue against.

My approval email doesn’t have anything about adding it to my phone wallet. Maybe because I’m a first time customer

Just let them know the upgrade is part of the welcome offer, and should be actioned within 10 days. (Someone probably didn't read the whole thing)

All good! Got my card today. Very quick. Approved on Tuesday morning and card arrived this morning, just in time to hit the requirement this weekend :)

I applied for one of these and was rejected.
As a self funded retiree I found it a little puzzling I didn't satisfy HSBC's criteria, given I have demonstrable income that qualifies and ability to draw on liquid assets well above any commitments, investment loan and otherwise.

This is the first time I have applied for a CC since being fully employed , and the first time in my life I have been rejected for credit.

Wondering if other self funded retirees are having similar experiences.

Do you mind me asking , when did you apply and how long did it take for the approval email to arrive. Did they ask for any additional information. thanks

I am in two minds if I have to apply as I have upcoming UK trip in Apr 2023 and currently silver with Krisflyer.

Yes. As I recall, this has been reported here a long time ago. No credit card shuffles to boost points available to us.
In the discussions with 2 agents, they seemed to have no understanding of superannuation in pension phase.
Never mind ... their loss.

Also, their were using a very sub-standard VOIP international phone connections which dropped out continuously making the conversation difficult. They blamed my mobile, but it was showing full signal and I usually have very clear conversations here.

As you say their loss (some of us earn more in retirement than working). I banned HSBC anyway so even though rusted onto SQ would never give them anything

Hey everyone,

I'm considering churning for this card to get *A Gold. I have 1 round trip to Seoul and 1 circuit - SYD - ICN - NRT - SYD all in the economy. I was thinking that I nominate *A Gold with Asiana so I can just do 30k miles instead of 40k to keep *A Gold. I am aware that Asiana will merge with Korean Air but I am willing to gamble for it when they merge. I would most likely get merged into SkyTeam which is not bad since I might switch to Vietnam Airlines in future.

The only thing T&C on HSBC is that you will lose *A Gold if you cancel the card. It didn't say anything about maintaining *A Gold by flying with one carrier to keep that status.

Anyone see a loop hole for this?

"Asiana is not on the partner airline list.." Well my hope and dream for *A gold just got burned to the ground. I thought it was for any *A partner :( I guess it would be Air Canada then...

If to do. Not select an airline for status you could obtain 40000 points instead .

That's right, which will then convert to 32,000 actual frequent flyer points. I'm not sure why anyone would have signed up for the card to avail of such a disappointing sign-up bonus but I'm sure there will be someone, somewhere...
