hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Will need to do some reading to see where the best value lies for me
Probably still SQ for the year as have two more Europe trips coming up in next 12 months

Would be interested in your report as to how quickly the status is offered and then approved, once you pass the spend threshold.

Hi everyone!
I tried applying for HSBC star alliance credit card but gave up due to the sheer incompetence and time consuming application process.
Has anyone had the same experience with this bank or did I just get unlucky?
Am looking for alternatives to the new devaluation of AMEX rewards (typically transfer to SQ).

It literally took me 3 months of calling customer service to try and get my application approved. When the application was approved they failed to send me a card twice after I had received a text saying my card had been delivered and ready for activation. I literally couldn’t get the card sent to me. So I aborted the whole process.

I got the card last week and the process was painless. Probably maybe due to having an inactive everyday card.

I applied online last week. Uploaded docs without an issue.. no one even contacted me. Got a text saying I was approved and card arrived within 4 days.
I was very impressed.
Chose Air Canada for the extra time they give in maintaining Gold.

My experience has been as follows:

24/5 - Applied for Card alongside mortgage with HSBC (having a relationship manager assisting with this may have mitigated some of the issues others have had with the application process)
29/5 - Approved
26/6 - Spent $4k
27/6 - Email notification with Star Alliance Rewards portal login details and advice to nominate Star Alliance program number by 11/7
12/7 - Email notification that Star alliance had advised nominated program (AC Aeroplan) of *G qualification. Logged into AC Aeroplan which shows AC 50k status through to 31 Dec 2024.

Happy days.

thanks for that detailed info.
I too mortgage with HSBC, but don't intend to fly long haul international next 18months so holding off appling for this card.

Mental note to apply early in a year to get 12months + current year remaining.
Continue CC churning for now.

I have to say this card has one of the best conversion rate for Star alliance at 5:4 for Krisflyer, Eva Air and Aeroplane. Will hopefully be applying for this in October.

You lucky you got good relationship manager, mine basically just give the number to call to apply for the card and that's it

@QF_Flyer did you get your 32k bonus KF miles already? Easy? Difficult?
Sorry I missed this - yes, well I got the 40k Star Alliance points, I haven't transferred them yet. But yeah it was easy, when linking my SQ account I just ticked a box saying I already had SQ Gold or higher, and then when I hit the $4k I got an email a day or two later saying 40k *A points would be credited at next statement date, which they were. Pretty easy all things considered. I've kept the card for now, because it's a half decent earn rate for SQ/Star in general.

Given the issues some have had, thought I'd add that I've had a (not very heavily used) HSBC Global account for several years (from when they offered $125 to open it, 2019 I think), so didn't have to go through the ID verification or all that, it was pretty painless.

But, if it doesn't go smoothly right away, I have found that HSBC in general (both here and in the UK) are not an easy bank to deal with, they make simple things unnecessarily difficult, for no good reason, to the point where I've given up on them before. But I could apply for the same thing a week later and have no issues at all, it seems that if something gets stuck in their system, you're in for a whole load of fun, but if not then it's pretty breezy. And there's no way of knowing which way things will go!

When you get your physical AC card in the mail, please report back on its expiry. My online expiry is 31/12/24 but my card is 31/12/23.

Applied to HSBC on the 15th June. I am a current customer but still needed to provide ID, proof of income etc. Then had to resubmit because evidently it got lost somewhere. CC approved on the 22nd June. Rewards and CC activated on the 25th. Received email that I'd achieved the required spend for Gold status on the 12th July and that that status would be requested from the airline on the 26th of July. I have nominated AC.

Quick follow up. I emailed Star Alliance to see if my status could be expedited (because I have upcoming AC flights). They were *very* responsive but explained that the system is automated and manual intervention was not possible.

Hey - worth a try, right?
