hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

I just checked my AC status in both App and Web. It has now gone to Base Red from 50K Gold today. So the time between my HSBC card closure and status drop to Red is 4 days.

Ouch. They’re onto that.

I’ll report back in a month or so on the “didn’t meet 60k spend but have AC status showing an expiry of Dec 25”.

Definitely 60k. It should be stated in your HSBC Bank statement.
Sorry, my bad, yes 60K. It crossed over the 60K line on the statement early September, so it has been 7 weeks now. Is there anything I need to do or does it automatically happen after a long delay? Thanks for your help :)

Is this for status renewal? Or the initial status upgrade?

Admittedly i am utterly confused by the whole 3 way relationship of hsbc, star and aeroplan.

I cancelled my card last week. Out of curisoity, But i reached the 50k or 60k spend like 2 months ago, shouldnt my status have been extended by another 12 months?

As of now its still showing as end of 2024 (i thought status was cancelled upon card cancelaltion)

Maybe they extend it on your anniversary date? Ie, in lieu of your annual fee, they see the 60k spend, and notify Aeroplan accordingly? It might not be ‘rolling’ like QF/VA etc.

Yeah that sounds very likely

Very surprised as i saw some ppl who had their status cancelled the day of cancellation

I read a few posts that seem to suggest the star alliance account with the points remain open even though the card itself is closed?
That's really interesting - I just checked the T&Cs, as I am about to cancel - and the T&Cs clearly say that the Star Alliance Rewards program depends on you holding the HSBC card.

We reserve the right, in our discretion, to suspend for such period as we consider appropriate and/or to permanently terminate your membership in the Program if:

  1. You stop being a holder of the Card

I am thinking that I will transfer anyway, rather than risk losing all my points.

I seem to still have status, and it appears i have 3 -6 guest passes that are trasnferrable. Am i able to donate them?

Awwww.... and I'm red :(
Where do I look to see if I have any guest passes - I cant see link on the aeroplan webpage ?

Hmm.. called HSBC credit card and they flatly said they never ever waive annual fees
Do they have a cooling of period i.e. They waive the annual fee if X days have past since the time the annual fee has hit the account like amex does?
When does the annual fee hit the account - is it exactly 365/366 days from the time the account is opened or aligned to the monthly billing cycle day of the month?

Hi all. Trying to understand the benefit of being Star Alliance Gold/Aeroplan on Virgin metal. Could not find any information except Lounge (maybe? but no extra luggage) with Virgin but what if flying with Virgin to airports where Virgin had no lounge, can we access other Star Alliance Lounges?
Thanks

Unfortunately not. The access is only to Virgin operated lounges.

If you are flying a star alliance carrier - rather than virgin itself - you’ll have access to any star alliance lounge, or alternative lounges as may be offered to star gold passengers.

Thanks. Yeah, I used the benefits flying as *Gold already last time flying United Polaris, Just not sure how to take advantage if flying Virgin. Looking at SYD-DPS and Virgin is the only straight forward option. But dont really want to fly with them.

What about other benefits with Aeoroplan - e-upgrade and Lounge Passes - are they gonna expired by end of the year? What a waste. Is there a way to gift them? Anyone want them? I'm not gonna be in North America until April 2025.

Congratulations! Air Canada - Aeroplan® confirmed your new Star Alliance Gold Status

Dunno about gifting lounge passes - it might be possible but I haven’t looked into it.

There is a ‘gift gold’ benefit for a single itinerary (one way, including any connecting flights). This is for travel on air canadia only. You can gift this to another passenger flying AC, and they get all the gold benefits for that day’s travel… so priority chicken, lounge access, boarding, etc.

But you gotta know someone flying AC!
