hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

I asked before but no response - does anyone know if DEFT payments count as spend please
I haven't confirmed on this card, but based on the way other cards treat these payments I would expect it to count only if you pay via the DEFT website and it includes a payment surcharge fee. But not if you pay via BPAY. I'm about to start using the HSBC Star Alliance card to pay my rent via DEFT so I guess I'll find out soon enough!

I will find out soon too - I've hit my spend if it includes the DEFT fees but will have to wait and see. Yes I went through the DEFT website and not BPAY

The annual fee on this card (charged in the second and subsequent years) will increase from 11 March 2025 from $450 to $499.
You have to wonder about the business considerations that go into designing and pricing this card product... Restricted earn, difficult qualification for the perks, and they want almost $500 to renew? (Not to mention it being HSBC🤮😡)

I reckon that they have a very good idea of how many people will:
  • Keep the card because it is too much trouble to cancel before the annual fee is charged, and won't cancel once it is, and
  • Keep the card despite the fee because they have almost enough points, so want to keep earning for a given flight, so keep the card anyway, and
  • Do not care.
I suspect that we here on this forum are in the minority.

TBH it’s not a terrible card. The 60K spend is annoying but workable (would be better without the reduced earn after 2.5k per month).
I’ve definitely gotten $500 value out of my star gold. Long haul sectors are always in J but I’ll happily fly Y on anything less than 2H so the lounge/baggage is useful. Even took full advantage and checked in nearly 120KG luggage between two of us on a JNB-SIN-SYD.
