At last! A major chain hotel in Hobart, so AFFers won't be at a loss as to where to stay (well, many of them :) ). (I'm not sure of the status of Crowne Plaza announced earlier.)

Report here (if pay walled, google 'Hobart Centric CBD Hobart).

I'll be over 200 rooms and right in the centre of town.

Designed by Neal Mackintosh, of JAWS Architects, the proposed 63m-high hotel will be five star with a restaurant, bar and function rooms.

The Singapore-based developer, Elizabeth Tasmania Pty Ltd, removed 10m in height from the original plan to gain the approval.

The original design had the taller of the two towers at 73m — the same height as Wrest Point casino.

The 221-room Hyatt Centric hotel would provide more than 94,000 annual visitor nights for Hobart, and attract at least an additional $18 million in visitor spending each year, the developer said.

Maybe a Wine Tour might be on to celebrate Hyatt's arrival :D

I'm not joining another hotel program no matter how much I like Hobart!

The Hyatt announcement is a big vote of Confidence for the booming Tasmanian Tourism market.
I can see this hotel being a huge success in a great destination like Hobart, that lacks serious upmarket Hotels.
The next Question is who will be next, to make a similar announcement to Commit to a new premium hotel in the Hobart Region?

How many do you think they can sustain? Keeping in mind if there is a 'dip' in the economy 5 Star properties will be vulnerable.

They have Grand Chancellor (let's call it a 4.5 star); the Islington (but it is small as is the Mona Pavillions). The crowne plaza will be online mid year ..which will have 4 - 4.5 star credibility ...maybe more boutique 5 star properties like Design collection stuff ...or Autograph Collection.

I am still surprised that Accor is not in the market here ...even at the budget end. Anybody know why?

For premium hotels, people often overlook the Federal Hotels, as they are not one of the major chains. They have the Henry Jones Art Hotel (even though drron and mrs.drron had a bad experience there, it is still a premium place :) ), and a new Federals hotel about to open on the waterfront; 115 rooms, 4.5 star. Also have Wrest Point, probably 4 star, due for an upgrade?

Accor used to have a Mercure in Hobart, but it was re branded Great Western a couple of years ago. Accor does have a Sebel in Launceston.

Back in the day I stayed at the Sheraton.
Of course that was many a long day ago.
