Trying really hard for this to not be a rant, but i think an illustration of the "difficulties" faced by QFi and perhaps an insight into why QFi are struggling.

Context was mrsdoc and I travelling to EU in J class (paid, unusual for us!).

Trying to book during QF/EK tie-up limbo period (Jan-Feb) so crazy $13000 airfares (J).

Pricing Issue #1 - BA had sale on so a $7k fare which we got discounted further (subsequently too late for us but QF did have a $6999 sale once the tie up completed). Not really an issue but unfortunate timing for us and for QFi as at that price they almost certainly would have got our business.

So we booked me via SYD outbound (I went 5 days earlier), mrsdoc via HKG (QF to HK, BA to LHR) - mrsdoc prefers HKG to SIN. We also both prefer not to connect in SYD inbound (well documented reasons abound on AFF).

Then QF changed their HKG timings, so we switched (foc) mrsdoc to via SYD outbound (2hr had become 6hr), and we kept both via HKG on the way home, with a 2hr connection now pushed out to 4hrs but we were fine with this.

Basically, BA were excellent. The biggest gripe for me was really minor - the menu showed three champagnes, then onboard they said "we only have the Tattinger". Happy crews, good attention without being intrusive, easy transit in LHR (amazing), easy outbound transit in SYD (amazing), priority luggage worked, seats were good (lie flat), the narrowness didn't bother me (and i'm far from narrow!). All in all, a good experience. Happily use BA again. In fact, very happily.

Then we got to HKG on the return leg.

Background # 1 - annoying that QF29/30 is now A330 and not 744 (personal aircraft preference). Timings also not as good as previously.

Background # 2 - already annoyed that QF dropped the status bonus earn on BA (which was offered) and short notice to this (see other threads, wont re-hash here).

Background # 3 - raised # 2 with QF, got system email "we got your letter" - 6 weeks later, no response whatsoever. Irritated by lack of response even more than #2.

So to the QF "experience":

Weirdness # 1 - our 3E/F seating (so we both get aisle access without climbing) had changed on checkin to 2J/K. No idea why, turned out 3E remained empty and the rest of the cabin was full - maybe 3E was broken? Who knows.

Enlightening #1 - Whilst the QF lounge is "adequate", it's too dark, the food's not that great, the lounge staff were making barely intelligible announcements. Gratingly, there is a huge sign at the entrance of the "new" J seats (Skybed II). Knowing full well the majority of QF flights to HK are on A330s with Skybed Is (for some time at least).

I know i'll be using the CX "wing" from now on. Much better, natural light, better food etc etc etc. Sure, probably not a fair comparison given relative pax volumes, but as OWS I know which one i'll be using in HK. And was no where near as full as the QF lounge with all three Aus flights leaving concurrently.

Once onboard, confusion reigned. It was as if the crew had never worked a QFi flight before. Couldn't find things, no identifiable CSM, "weird" vibe (I cant really explain it that well, but following are more examples of the "clunkiness").

Miffed # 1 - no pre departure drink (despite offering to the row in front and behind). Middle of row 2 also not offered. No idea how they missed a whole row, the pax in the middle of row 2 clearly weren't impressed either. Given we were delayed departure by ~ 20 mins (storms around HK), they had plenty of time and passed by and even looked at us - but failed to spot we had no drinks!

Miffed # 2 - they offered pyjamas around the cabin, one crew member apparently carrying M/L and one carrying a pile of L/XL. mrsdoc got given the M/L. When I pointed out the one they gave me was the wrong size - ie. they had a mix and hadnt given me L/XL I clearly asked for (and it would be apparent would require for everyone's benefit!), they were indignant to the point of acting like I wasbeing petulant (until i showed them the sticker that they'd given me the wrong size). For the record, I said "I'm sorry, i think you've given me the M/L size".

Miffed # 3 - the crew came around with amenity kits. Ran out after reaching mrsdoc. Recommenced handing out in row 3. Wasn't happy. Eventually had to ask for one post takeoff. Bizarro.

Annoying # 1 - It's an 8hr overnight flight. Taking 2.5hrs to serve dinner is unacceptable, particularly when you start clunking crockery and cutlery through the cabin 2.5hrs out from MEL as well. Leaving all of about three hours for sleeping. I gave up after 2hrs and just skipped dessert. It's one instance where an abbreviated meal service (rather than plate by plate which takes forever) would be preferable. Particularly as this crew seemed no sense of urgency to get through the meal service so pax could sleep. Why you'd do a "drinks trolley" run before serving is crazy given you place the salad and bread roll first, then wait, then entree, then wait, then main, then wait, then dessert (the options of which were terrible). Just do the drinks at the same time as placing the salad, entree and bread. On these "short" overnight flights at least (different to a 3pm departure).

Annoying # 2 - following # 1, given how lousy breakfast is now (a pastry and a coffee, seriously??), waking the entire cabin 2-2.5hrs out of MEL is hopeless. It should take about 30 mins. I'd even favour a rapid dinner (single tray) then a longer breakfast.

Annoying # 3 - mrsdoc complained that the crew spent most of the 3 hrs traipsing up and down the aisle - far from lightly. I didn't notice (had the window seat). It resulted in her getting very little sleep (on top of the abbreviated amount of time).

Miffed # 4 - for all the grief BA get for their food on AFF, the food was better than that on offer on this QF flight. I felt BA's offerings were more appetizing, more filling and more "comfort" than QF's offering.

Annoying # 3 - Geez, the seat "mattress" sure is clunky, i dont understand why you'd go for this mess when you could have just refurbed the seats (again, I know they're being replaced some time by 2020 with Skybed IIs but why not just leave the mattress on the bed). And why place it for aisle pax, then virtually throw it at the window pax (i tried to get up and stand in the aisle as everyone else had, but the crew member basically said "you can do it yourself"). WTF? And then to remove them before landing? I assume as they're detachable, they cant remain due to safety regs, which again means - why not have them affixed to the seats?

Overall Weirdness # 1 - just overall, there seemed no leadership (I couldn't even have told you which crew member was the CSM). The crew did not work well together (overlapping each other, missed things when switching jobs, generally inattentive to pax, bordering on rude at times, taking forever to get stuff done, total lack of co-ordination). FWIW (whcih may be nothing) the crew were all "mature" (in the J cabin at least). In comaprison to the BA crew who were noticeably younger. No idea if that is at all relevant. I did ask one of the crew, they had had a 48hr layover in HK.

So really, we got home safely, relatively on time (30 mins late, 20 of which was "ATC delay" coming into MEL). Checked bags arrived ~ok in MEL - albeit one came with the J priority bags, one towards the start of "the rest". But the whole time onboard, it just felt "weird".

Certainly, by the end of this flight, both mrsdoc and I felt we should have flown BA via SIN and put up with the SYD transfer, or better yet, next time it'll be BA LHR to HKG and CX home from there. Which bodes badly for QF as we've been loyal supporters (particularly mrsdoc - i've been wavering for some time). So the fact we think this should be alarming to QF!

I'll have re-qualified SG/OWS now, so have this covered for another 18 months. Long haul I still like Oneworld, but domestically i'm wavering (trying to keep SG with both). It's just that unless you get a good crew and an A380 (or refitted 744) QFi aren't competitive product wise. You can get away with it if your crew is superb, but they are too hit and miss now on top of a lousy product.

I know it's n=1 on this flight, but over some time we've been wavering due to the "enhancements" over the last number of years, and this one flight may well be the "icing on the cake" for us. Sad, but as the title suggests, I can see why QFi are struggling. When they're good, they're often great, but it's easy to be mediocre. The hard product updates cant come soon enough. Clearly, some of the crew need to align to the new standard too, but if fear still that it'll be too little too late.....

I'll have to disagree with "Annoying # 3". I for one am a big fan of the mattress type thing. On my flights it has been placed rolled up in its plastic on the seat upon boarding. The staff have then offered to come pop it on after take off. OK so it presents the issue of what to do with it until it's fitted, but it works great.

The removable reason would be twofold I'd imagine. 1) Hygiene; much easier to rip it off and wash it and 2) not everyone wants a cushy seat for a day time flight. I found them superbly comfortable on my flights, and had a great sleep on each of them (my last one leaving LHR I slept *too* well; I prefer to stay awake on the flight from LHR to SIN (when it was around) for as long as possible and then sleep SIN-MEL to adjust to a better to AEST.

Will entirely agree with the meal. I spoke to the Rockpool folk about this at the Tweet & Eat in MEL Rockpool and they were very excited about it. When pointed out I couldn't simply 'pick up my tray if I needed a quick trip to the lav' it was dismissed as 'people are loving it!', the same as your 'café style breakfast' comment. I'm not a fan of a pastry and coffee for breakfast either.

On an 8 hour flight as you say, you want to maximise rest not wait and get a 'nap'. It defeats the purpose of business class, especially for those who do actually intend on going to the office upon landing!

That's disappointing to hear about your experience on the A330, I don't mind the A330 as an aircraft on international routes, but on the longer ones (ie MEL-SIN) I would rather an A380.
I also had a less than good experience flying J on QF A330 SIN-BOM March last year, lack of crew in J, lack of attention/motivation from crew, no proactive filling of drinks, food not collected in reasonable time had to page for it.
Once landed found out that a whole container of bags were "forgotten" in SIN, and spent 2 hours in the baggage queue, no compensation, just a bag with some ammenities thats it.
I complained to QF customer care about it and requested a points refund for the upgrade simply because the flight was totally unacceptable, was just told by customer care sorry for your experience passed on your feedback and we can't refund points to you...

Needless to say what a big waste of points that flight was. would have been better off in Y.

Wonder if the A330 FA's get different training to the 744/A380 crew? or what the cause of the A330 service indifference is..?

I haven't flown A330 internationally since last year so can't comment on how it is now..

I am flying QF A330 SIN-MEL soon, so will be interesting to see how I am treated especially since now I am WP.

Had a very similar experience of bad and plain rude crew on BKK-SYD. Terrible food for dinner and a cold ham and cheese sandwich for breakfast. J to SIN on the A380 was completely the other side of the spectrum, maybe the crew on the A330 are just unhappy to be on the A330...

*edit*

To the OP please send your feedback to QF as well, if everyone does hopefully something changes. Hopefully the service will be better when I am back up to BKK in July

I have similar delayed service on the overnights ex SIN.

Sometimes it seems like the CC have been in Party mode for a day or so and are having trouble switching to Professional mode - maybe they are just hungover or very tired.

150 minutes to get service is disgusting!

It sounds like you had the Ghost Flight. Did you get the rego? Flew SIN-ADL last year in Y with Qantas so A330. This was with the family and brother inlaw and his wife. Many of the things you describe sound familiar. We all got off the aircraft saying "Ghost Flight". It was the absolute worst flight I've ever had, including Tiger.

Oh, but I did have a whinge about the lack of a pre-dinner drink on a LHR-SIN flight last year.

On my return from SIN in J last week (744), I have to say I thought the order of dinner service to be odd - as you say.

I don't care for bread and salad, to be followed by entree, to be followed by main on an evening departure.

Just serve the damn salad and bread WITH entree - seriously. Oh and drinks at the same time.

And breakfast was a joke - really - a pastry???? I'd get more on JQ and for a lot less.
They did have an egg and bacon croissant - but I don't eat bacon - so it was a bowl of 6 pieces of fruit salad.

Not really a J class offering IMHO.

On a related note - I've been more and more disappointed with the "Rockpool" inspired offerings in the last year or two.

Perhaps I'm not chic enough. ;)

Forgot one point - mrsdoc was pretty miffed when I had a glass of red wine poured to have with dinner. She had the wine pre-dinner and was incredulous when they didn't spontaneously refill her (smaller) glass. So had to ask - met by the same attitude as the pyjama comment in the op.

On BA drinks were well attended (by way of immediate comparison).

@ ozmille - I'm not sure if I can be bothered given they haven't even replied to my last issue (see OP and threads about BA points earn).

I'm not sure why you just don't fly CX? They have arguably the best J product in the world right now?

I doubt they're making much money on the SIN route in Y with so many Brazilians travelling for only $400 either....

At $12000 for the dates we were looking at, they'd want to be.

Again, they had a sale not long after we ticketed BA at ~ $8k.

Next time, subject to price, it'll be BA/CX combo I suspect.

yup totally agree with the sloppy approach to the night HKG to australia sectors.

Even on the 380 there is the same issues with taking too long to serve dinner, serving brekky too early and generally minimising sleep time.

i would be seriously peeved to experience that on the 330 also!

last time i did this flight in J was at xmas and i took CX....it is worlds apart - i told the crew not to wake me for brekky and got about 5-6 hours sleep after a quickly served meal on take off, obviously the seat is fully flat on CX 330 and comfortable.

nothing was too much trouble...

Why dont they have a book the cook, delivered to you at a nominated time in the lounge as an alternative?

Did you or mrsdoc walk under a ladder docjames?

Sounds very ordinary. The crew with their little mistakes all over the place sound like a VA crew I had in J MEL-PER (but the VA crew did not have an 'attitude' like the QF crew seems to have had). Fortunately subsequent VA transcons have been OK. I hope this was a fairly isolated 'incident' - QFd crews have been great for me lately, and I would hate for QFi to drag everything/everyone else down.

I don't blame you for wanting to switch carriers. QF can build up enough brownie points (though I see you were having doubts prior) so that the occasional lapse can be tolerated, but this was obviously several years worth of lapses.

On the positive side it is good to hear BA was so good. They have had some fairly indifferent reports in recent times.

Yes, after recent reports BA far exceeded expectation (I was worried but they were overall very very good).

This was the thing, we'd have eaten more in the CX lounge if we'd known how average the QF food would be (and how slow). Again, didn't live up to the hype/expectation QF sets/"sells".

We've enjoyed all of our BA flights. Have never understood the poor rap they cop:confused:

In order of preference, I'd rate OW flights in & out of Oz :-

CX
BA
MH......QF

The fact that QF service most of their Asian flights with a second class J cabin....is an absolute joke.

Is it any wonder QFI doesn't make money!

CX has A330 to HKG from all Australian Ports, SQ also has A330 to most Australian ports, QF has A330 to most Asian ports. So A330 itself is not the issue. QF just need to renovate their A330 cabins!

The hard product compounds the inconsistency in service problem. CX service is always good I find. No wonder they dominate QF on the HKG route.

Had good service on A330 SYD-HKG and SYD-PVG. But HKG-MEL overnight had good service bar one very rude flight attendant who was so rude I was motivated to write a complaint to Mr Joyce. Got a phone call back from Executive Management saying they would investigate and apologising.

This is slightly reminiscent to my CGK-SYD flight on QF42 A330 sometimes back (~1 year ago). If you think getting plenty of sleep in J is bad, try in Y as an NB :-D

Dinner service took 2 hours to _start_, and then another ~2 hours from start to finish. To top it off, my row (25 or 26, I didn't quite remember) was forgotten (not offered dinner). So is the row in front of me. When we press the call button (sometimes later), the reason was "I thought you were asleep". Somewhat odd as I have my laptop open all that time (and I kept looking around checking when is my dinner coming). On arrival it's quite similar, woken up ~2hours prior, just to wait another hour for the breakfast, etc. Getting even a 2 hours sleep on a 7 hours flight, is tough, more so in Y.

I haven't flown that route again in Y for a while, but my recent experience with A330s SYD-SIN rt in Y was much better (maybe having a status helps). But looking at the OP it seems that this indeed still depends on luck and highlights how inconsistent the service can be.
