I got an involuntary flight change and this is what happened…

I have the same issue with Qantas re-routing my SYD-MEL-HND flight in December to SYD-BNE-HND. It's really annoying because I'm on holiday and I don't have a phone plan so I can't call Qantas (not that I really want to whilst on holiday).

I will give them a call when I return to Australia to see if they will let me change to SYD-HND, but it's a bit annoying as I would like the extra SCs (I might cop an overnight transit in MEL to catch the MEL-HND flight).

Fingers crossed that I get something that works!
Tokyo flights moving to NRT for both BNE and MEL

If you do get a change, save your original ticket and your boarding passes and claim for original routing credit when you get back. Unfortunately this may take a very long time to come through - I’m still waiting for ORC on my flight home from Japan on Feb this year where the connection SYD-CBR was downgraded from J to Discount Y causing a loss of 30 SC, plus another 30 SC owed because it was a double SC flight booking. You will have to be firm with them, but when the downgrade/reroute is involuntary, you are entitled to the SC originally booked if that’s better than what you end up flying. Be persistent and patient.

Thanks for the suggestion! That's a really great idea, I didn't realise I was entitled to the original SC.

To clarify, does this mean I could ask to be re-routed on SYD-HND and still claim the original SC for SYD-MEL-HND?

I don't mind waiting for the ORC to post - I will be flying in Dec and my membership year ends in Sept.

Yes you can claim your original booking if it’s better than what you fly.

You have to actively claim, though. They won’t just do it automatically.

Got it, thanks!

Yeah, I figured I'd have to actively claim. I'm okay with fighting them to claim if it means I can actually fly to Haneda!

That was my issue too. Just tell them Narita doesn’t suit which is why you booked to Haneda in the first place. Good luck. It may be a bit of an ordeal to get sorted based on my experience.

Email address for the ORC claim is [email protected]
