There was no The Simpsons in those days, erkpod :p :)

I remember those BS (Before Simpsons) days. Scary to think that some people don't know life without them.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to Moe's Tavern. ;)

There would be some very tired horses if they were trained for a mile but then had to run 20 furlongs:)
Yep - it is 8 chains to the mile.

The 20 related to volume, I should add 2, 8 and 5 to that ...

Did you just remember all these numbers (not that that was a big ask), or was there some kind of order you were meant to remember the numbers, or mnemonic / rhyme you could recite off?

OTTOMH ... I have always been good at remembering numbers ... certanly no mnemonic otherwise they may have been better grouped.

The last lot are all volume as indicated - FWIW, one of them represents a ¼ pint.

Anyone remember the day their first, solid state most likely Rank Arena brand Black and White TV was delivered?

I do, which means I also remember a life without TV, let alone The Simpsons.

We got evicted from our hole in the ground..

I remember at my high school in the late 70s we had the main canteen which served the sangers, rolls, pies (30c), sausage rolls (18c), and HOT DOGS (28c)! They also had cream buns, vanilla slices and chocolate eclairs (20c).

But we also had a LOLLY counter where the ladies sold fruit juice, flavoured milk, chips with all the variations on Twisties, Cheezels, Burger Rings etc and then ice blocks like Pola Boy (7c), Paddlepops (10c) and others. The actual lollies acceptable to the school were licorice sticks, eucalyptus lollies and SOS cough drops! Maybe even mint leaves at some stage. We also had a drink machine that presented a cup of ice with a bit of watery cordial and water in it. I think that was 20c but if you put a 1c coin in and bashed the right spot you'd get a cheaper drink.

My mum tells me that in the early days of TV in Australia, she used to watch TV in shop windows or used to go to a friend's house who had TV & watch it there. It wasn't for a few years that we as a family had TV.

We did have a rather large Rank Arena TV in the late 70s - my grandma had failing eyesight in her later years & the bigger screen was easier for her.

My dad grew up in Chatswood during the depression. I remember him telling me how he would ride his horse down Pittwater Road (which was dirt in those days) to Narrabeen and back. A fellow with a horse and cart would travel up and down Mowbray road each day crying out "Rabbo, get your fresh rabbo" ie rabbit meat. He wouldn't recognise Chatswood now!
