I think I sat next to this guy once.

I belong to the group of people who doubt this is a legit photo...

There are several things just not right...

Firstly, I would expect more people to be "looking" at him.
Secondly, the seat just doesn't look right - as if it is missing some of the seat.
Lastly, when viewing the image (the one on Flyertalk) up close, I don't think his image blends properly with the background image.

I'm not an image specialist though - these are just my thoughts...

Would be nice to see it appear on Snopes.com and be confirmed or denied!

Irrespective of whether or not the photo has been fixed, is it fair that airlines do not charge by passenger weight? This seems to be the basis for luggage charging.

Is that on flights to the next socialist party meeting?

I join your group.. in perspective, the guy would be over 8' tall, the arm rest would be creating distortion, and there's no way his posture would be vertical with that amount of weight hanging into open space...

Mr!

It has been postulated the guy is sitting on the armrest (with attendant "overhang" Guh!)

It is quite possible the image is real, I certainly did not believe it myself initially but am now undecided )

It is pretty clear that he is sitting on the armrest, which would account for the height issue. But he is still big. How did he put on the seat belt. Clearly couldn't have!

Perhaps someone has taken a normal big person who had to sit on the armrest in the process of sitting down and then streched them using photoshop.

Otherwise, nothing wrong with his posture, try sitting half on a seat or on an armrest and you will see your body can support itself. The seat also seems to be stressed in the correct manner, with the top left side being pushed back. But as I say he is big but also rather toned (all things considered). What an old wrestler who has let himself go?

Real or not I certainly got a shock as soon as I saw it, hoping that I would never have to encounter anything even 1/2 as bad!

Most aircraft carry "seat belt extenders". They are a length of seat belt webbing with a buckle and a tongue at opposite ends. They are adjustable and provide up to around 60cm extension.

If it is real he looks to be sitting on the armrest. But could an armrest take that much weight ? He'd have to be....what....300kg ?

The armrest would probably be up to it.

I am guessing his feet would be bearing much of the load - can't imagine 80cm² of butt taking his whole mass with severe discomfort!

I actually saw something very similar on a flight from BNE to DRW this year. The gentleman had the armrest up and was 1/3 into the aisle. I was very surprised that QF allowed him to fly with 1. the arm rest up and 2. no seatbelt for the entire duration of the flight.

Sitting next to him..... You could only hope he had washed between the folds of fat. Morbidly obese people tend to stink.

He would have had the extension belt on as it is a requirement for all pax and crew to wear a seatbelt for takeoff and landing.

However I have sat next to skinny people who smell as well so I guess when flying you should hope the person beside you has showered regardless of their size.

I can't even count the number of times I have been next to "stinky feet man" or "holy s&^t how much perfume did you put on this morning lady" and these are just as bad.

However I tend to think this photo is altered somehow. It just looks weird.

That's what surprised me, he wasn't wearing a seatbelt for takeoff or landing. I was on the opposite aisle seat 2 rows back so had a good view of the unfasten seatbelt hanging under the seat.

I'm pretty sure you have to have the armrests up for takeoff and landing too, but there was no way this was possible with the size of the gentleman.
