In the morning it was off to Airlie Beach via the Gregory Highway then across to Mackay via Moranbah and Nebo.
Not far north of Emerald is a nice little town,Capella.

A nice walk alongside the railway and you end up at the Light Horse Memorial.

The highway bypasses Clermont and we decided to give it a miss so we could have lunch in Mackay.Thought there would be a lot more choice. As soon as you turn off to Moranbah you pass the first coal mine.Already being rehabilitated in parts.

The road was generally straight and not much traffic.
DSC06501.JPG.

Getting closer to Moranbah there were a few roadworks.A few were government jobs no one was working as a Sunday. There was a fairly long section being built by a mining company to have a large turn off for a new mine. There was a full work force and the standard of the works looked a lot better.
Then more coal mines.

There were close to 50 mines we passed or on roads leaving the Moranbah road.I don't see any QLD Government giving up what must be a huge revenue stream.

The Light Horse Memorial is really well done. Capella is 35kms West of my home town.

We easily made Mackay for lunch and picked the Ban-Na Thai restaurant.Good vibes when we entered as only 1 other Caucasian couple and all the other guests were Thai or had a Thai partner. We had a Pad Thai and a quail dish with coconut rice.It was very good and we would recommend it.

The naval vessel came back.In fact it came and went several times over a few hours.Initially it was heading to where we again saw whales breaching.Maybe it was a naval whale watching cruise.
