Surprised CX/JL/TG on the avoid list QF009 (although agree would go QF/BA on equivalent routes, but happily fly any of them if no QF/BA).
I wouldn't want to get into another prolonged debate about CX as I'm aware they have their fans on here.
If I didn't care about FFP, when there's no QF/BA I'd much rather fly SQ or MH over any of those.
JL/NH have v nice hard products (well, JL J aside), but i suffer a mild culture shock each time I'm onboard. I understand that it's Japanese culture to be so painfully polite, but it makes me uncomfortable.
TG is more because of the inconsistency - you never know what you're going to get from crew right down to equipment. Equipment wise I think they're now better as almost all planes have been refurbished, but when I flew them the only way I knew definitively what I was going to get was when I actually stepped onboard. I remember chuckling when they advertised their new service to Moscow with their new product on their A346 aircraft, only to service the route for the first few months with their ancient MD11s, i thought "how TG." They were advertising the debut of their new 772ER with the new angled flat product so prominently in MEL. I actually flew MEL-BKK on the day the a/c was advertised to have been launched for service out of MEL (TG rep on the phone even boasted "yes it's going to be great, we're going to be just like Singapore Airlines"), only to step onboard and find a ratty old 773 fitted with Millenium-style seating. And I wouldn't even begin on the slip-shod service (eg lazy FA insisted on serving the Bordeaux when I'd asked for the Bourgogne, insisting that it's "all the same") or the reckless disregard for safety on that flight.... When I returned a few weeks later however, it was like flying on a totally different airline - brand spanking new plane, fantastic service. My other trips with them have also mirrored similar inconsistencies and flying with TG is really like playing Russian roulette. Their only saving grace is perhaps their catering, which is quite good in both J and whY, though F is rather J-esque.

EDIT: I'd just realised that I've actually written up TRs of these very TG flights, so to illustrate:

On a bad day, TG FAs can be rather racist towards pax of Asian background. Yes ironic I know, and I'd never level accusations of racism lightly and have always defended carriers like QF, SQ and even CX against similar accusations from people who live in their cocoons of persecution. Neither am i the kind who overanalyses everything and try to see discrimination everywhere i go. But when your seatmate is a caucasian and always gets served first, auto drink top ups whereas you're conscientiously ignored, which btw has occurred on more than 1 flight, it's hard not to notice a certain pattern of behaviour. On more than one occassion, my seatmate/s have also noticed and have been kind enough to direct the FAs' attention to their neglect.
*deep breaths*
Why are KLM on never fly??
Experienced them thrice, never again. skan_y, skan_y carrier.
And before i get pulled up again for OT-ness
, I'd never let a single bad experience colour my views of an entire organisation. Though first impressions can have a disproportionate influence on one's perception, I'd only come to a conclusion of any service provider once a trend can be established.
