Wonder what would/should happen if the guy was caught smoking, talking loudly on his mobile phone in the aircraft toilet even though the seatbelt sign was switched on, whilst his children were running up and down the cabin uncontrolled yelling and screaming.

They would Immediately be elevated to WP because DYKWIA? Plus those people who would do this would be in Hi Vis as well.....and they should be banned from the QP, never get op ups or double status credits either.

Whoever it was deserves whatever they get, and a bit more. Anyone who is likely to try such a stunt is not reading our boards here, so we are not going to get our message across to them. Qantas haven't even been able to get pb right, despite almost 200 pages of suggestions and reports here, so after 60 posts on this It is time for a laugh (hopefully) and to move on. I'm not defending the Wally.

Ok I'll admit, that to me, your questioning of the enforceability of it, did come across as, "oh well if you can get away with it..." but thanks for clarifying.

Well I hope the police charged him (with something like endangering an aircraft) and that he is banned from travel on ALL airlines for at least a year. You can't tolerate this stupidity and for doing something so deliberate.

In the 80´s flying Lan Chile across the Pacific they used to give you a ten pack of smokes on each meal tray. Times have changed.
The ban is I believe totally about work place standards. Millions of flights flew trillions of pax, all merrily smoking and getting pissed at the back of the plane, for decade after decade, without it proving a danger to the safety of the aircraft. I suspct the ban on smoking that forces idiots to light up furtively has increased the danger. Having said that, I totally agree that no non-smoker should ever be forced to sufffer the poison from cigg smoke. But we have to recognize that there are still many smokers, and that the power of the addiction of nicotine is going to make a few of them take enormous risks.

As a recently reformed smoker (3 weeks actually so still considered a smoker ) twice travelled to the States over the last couple of years . Patches work fine for the flight so can't really see why smokers don't use them on flights . They do cut the urge a great deal .

Actually, taking the cultural blinkers off, there are vast swathes of people, particularly in some parts of the world, who have a very different understanding of what is dangerous and what is acceptable or not. Rules are often ignored. It's not necessary even for the front wheels to touch down to get out of seats and start retrieving carry on luggage, you only need the rear wheels to touch down. Same principles as the above mentioned. N. Icelandair (look it up ) . You see it on the road, you see it in the air, you see it all sorts of places. I guess one could expect better behaviour from international long haul passengers though, but this doesn't at all surprise me (it would if it was a MEL-SYD flight though).

While it is stupid, I can understand why it still happens. Even though there are no smoking signs everywhere, the fact all our aircraft have ashtrays (as required by law to safely dispose of one in case someone does light up) can send a very confusing message in particular for first time travellers and non english speakers.

un or under-educated people need help conforming to our western ways, he may well have been on his first flight and/or not understumbled english. A simple warning and a two strikes you're out policy would be adequate IMO

And as for what would have happened if they were not sprung? They would have enjoyably finished their smoke, disposed of it in the PERFECTLY SAFE ashtray, and on their departure from the toilet they would have left a lingering odour far less unpleasant to the next user of the cubicle than the average tourist with their travel-ravaged bodily functions.

For me this reflects the attitude of air travel just being a bus ride - no need to bother with seat belts, get up to go to the loo during turbulence, stand up during taxi, ignore the crew during safety briefing... All this just shows a lack of respect.

I have the 'pleasure' of spending a fair bit of time in underground coal mines as part of my job. not so long ago some of the lads were underground and smelt cigarette smoke. Following there noses they tracked the guy down who was smoking. He was promptly 'helped' into a transport and 'ushered' out of the underground environment.

The smoker on this plane needs to be taken into the galley and given a good smack in the mouth and then 'assisted' back to his seat.

I think you need to distinguish between ¨excusing¨/¨defending¨ him, with simply not being amazed that yet another human being has done something foolish. What would THOROUGHLY amaze me if it did not happen again, and again, and again.

His action of throwing a lit smoke in a bin is atrocious. But the danger it actually posed to the plane was not that great. And the reason it was not great is because the people that design planes actually understand human nature, and they KNOW that there will be a never-ending supply of idiots who will do stupid things, and thus they design to protect us from those fools. I doubt that a single day goes by without some tosser having a smoke in the toilet of a plane somewhere in the world.

Also, perhaps the guilty party was just an off duty pilot? :!: It's not exactly unheard of in China that crew on the flight deck enjoy a smoke or two ( go to pprune and search for smoking and China). I am guessing through they do not dispose of the ash/butt in a rubbish bin though.
