If you had a flight booked in J and were offered 100 per hour to sit in Y. Would you?

Re: If you had a flight booked in J and were offered 100 per hour to sit in Y. Would

If I paid for business class and did not receive compensation for the difference between business and economy then $100/hour is nowhere near enough.

If someone else was paying for me to travel and they offered $100/hour for me to sit in economy I would definitely do it without a second thought.

For my own personal travel I am more than happy to sit in economy, stay in 1-2-3 star hotels and plan as many trips as possible. For me it is all about quantity not quality....
Personal preferences I think - in 1977 I spent two months back packing in Israel and Greece, living on a shoe string. In 1985 a month back packing around Japan with a budget so tight I lost 7 kgs while over there. They are among my happiest memories and I wouldn't change a single thing, including flying Y. However now at a much greater age, I still want to go to exciting places (e.g. booked to go to a game reserve (Singita Grumeti, Tanzania), next year and Gallipolli in 2015 and planning has started for the silk route between China and Russia and South America/Galapagos). The difference is I now want to do it as comfortably as possible and that means 4-5 star hotels, being looked after (although NOT on a tour if possible) and flying at least J. So for me it is now quality not quantity :)

Hi Pleb,

This is kind of the point. I was seeing if people instinctively placed a different value on the same fare difference when phrased differently. The best way to consider it is cash price vs cash price as otherwise you need a value on FF points.

If you swapped the question around and it was 'Would you pay $100.00/hr for an upgrade to J with full J FFP and SC?', I would most likely pay this cost for any long haul overnight flight.

The QF upgrade cost to J for LAX-SYD is 72000 FFP. At a nominal value of 2.0c/FFP, this is a nominal cost of $1440.00 for the upgrade. Flight time the long way (from LAX) is 15:00, giving a nominal cost of $96.00/hr for the upgrade (without J FFP or SC).

Nope and nope

No way Fred!

Considering all my J flights have worked out to far less than $100/hr, yeah, I'd take it. Especially if it was just a seat swap and I still got to earn the points and SC's :D

I don't know where that comparison is coming from - travel vs accommodation.. seems null and void.

Does staying at such a hotel transport you to the other side of the world?

Also, since when does a standard revenue J return flight to the USA cost 6k?!

All classes of travel Y, J, F provide the same outcome of transporting you from one point to another. Hence why I was minusing the Y fare from the J fare to come up with what you are mostly paying for comfort.

Ok 8-9k then for return J so 4.5k one way in J vs 1k one way in Y.. so 3.5k for one nights accommodation +some average food(by resteraunt standard). If i could 'suck up' one nights accommodation i could "earn" (save) 3.5k tax free.

One you arrive cramped and having eaten food out of metal containers
One you arrive feeling pretty good and having eaten nicely
One you arrive feeling excellent after a good nights sleep and having restaurant quality food

Exactly my point. Those differences of "feeling pretty good and having eaten nicely" is that worth 3.5k to you (each way)? Would you pay 3.5k for a nights accommodation in a hotel that gave you the same 'difference'? I know it's hard to compare as you don't have hotels that force you to be so cramped and upright to sleep (Y)... but 3.5k is a lot for one nights accommodation no matter what it involves.

I know what you are saying, but over the past few years as I moved away from Y to Y+, then J and now F means that flying in Y or Y+ just can't happen anymore

But yes I think the extra $3.5k+ is worth it, but that's usually for a return trip in J
