ALAEA federal secretary Steve Purvinas said the union planned to re-schedule the four-hour stoppage on Friday.

"I would think that by October the 28th when the Qantas AGM takes place you're likely to see full-day stoppages," Mr Purvinas told reporters in Melbourne.

"If I was a person considering travel over the period up until Christmas I'd probably be looking at airlines other than Qantas.

"If I was a passenger I wouldn't be purchasing a ticket with them at this stage."

Qantas described the comments as outrageous and damaging, as well as counter-productive.

Wow, Steve... I thought we'd heard everything from you, but no. Please run Qantas into the ground, then you and your lemmings will have a painful, painful fall.

Well as much as you might dislike the messenger, that seems to be very sound advice.
Although I think most people have worked that out for themselves, it's nice to see someone publicly stating the obvious. The occasional traveller might be oblivious to the dispute and so at least this warning can allow them to make appropriate arrangements for Christmas. Obviously we would not see this statement from Qantas, so well done, Steve.

Now we can leave the warring parties to themselves and let the traveling public remain as least affected as possible.

No need for the unions to run the airline into the ground. The CEO and Chairman are already doing that. This is repeated by the majority of employees (union members and non-union members).

Hey Steve - bit of advice. The airline needs passengers to pay your workers - no passengers, no airline, no jobs for anyone!

Fair dinkum, this guy is a fool. The public don't need to be told what to do - they have a choice between airlines, and the more that leave, the less likely the union is going to get what they what.

Re: IF you're planning on flying in the lead up to Christmas, don't fly Qantas. - ALA

I couldn't think what Steve says could get any worse, this kind of rubbish came out.

I couldn't' believe it when I heard a Union representative, on behalf of employees at Qantas to tell the public to "consider other airlines"

On top of this, the dirty tricks of calling a strike and then calling it off hours before it's meant to start is appalling behaviour.

I'm no Qantas fanboi, but this just shows how unreasonable and out of touch the Unions have become.

I’m really looking forward to them going bankrupt because of the unions stoppages. It’s going to be so funny when 35,000 employees have NO job. All because of the DAMAGING words and advice to buy elsewhere by the head of a union.

Seriously, your members get paid because people book and fly on your airline. If they don’t book and fly, you don’t make money, you don’t have a job.

Can’t be too much longer and then I’ll laugh.

No offence to those that work at Qantas.

I think even joking about so many people losing their jobs and livelihood is really off to be honest. And laughing about it... Sure thing...

No offence to those who think it's funny.

(I'm disappointed we are even giving this guy airtime. Yes I know by commenting I am too....)

To those who think steve is talking sense just remember if people take his advice in large numbers the risk is that QF folds. Then just watch the VA fares.

Funnier still is that VA pay less yet no union action is being taken against them.

QF lose revenue more job lay offs and the only one with jobs will be the union hacks like Sheldon.

I support QF and I will still book and fly with them and I hope the workers wake up soon and tell their union to pull their heads out of the sand and realize that QF can't afford to pay about 12% more than VA and then cop a 15% pay increase demand. The unions need to understand that without an affordable workforce they will force QF into a corner that no one will win in.

It should be remembered that Qantas management has publicly declared that thousands of these jobs are in the process of being culled. These jobs are then going to foreign workers. If Qantas goes down, it won't affect the workers, since in effect, they've already been sacked.

From a negotiating point of view, this is very poor strategy from Qantas Management, because you should always leave your opponent with the possibility that they will get have something at the end of the negotiation.

But what Qantas Management are saying to the staff, is "please don't strike now, because we need you for another 18 months....... before we then sack you.".

Too funny.

Outrageous disgraceful comments. Anyone who supports this kind of madness doesn't deserve the salary that us loyal flyers afford QANTAS employees. What are these people going to do if their mad plan to bleed QANTAS dry works? It's madness.

If the airline sacks these union workers within 12 months, can you blame them? They need to cut costs, they are costing the airline money - easy to see who will go first.

Meanwhile, VA workers are happy on less money. If the QF strikers think they are so hard done by, leave and you will realise how good you have it.

VA workers weren't so happy not long ago! It will be VA's turn again in the not too distant future...

Unless the union asks for about 30% pay increase it will still seem the union is anti QF and as QF are a much larger employer the unions should remember where the payroll for their members come from and stop trying to ruin QF.

Actually, the LAME roles cannot be done overseas - they are needed for the day to day operation of each and every flight.

Their issue relates to the legacy work practices of the "two Airline System" when there was lot's of Moolah to be splashed around.

How many does an airline need?

How many do VA use per flight when compared to the number that is mandated for Qantas by the existing agreements?

In the past 12 to 18 months VA signed EBAs with the engineers, shorthaul cabin crew, longhaul cabin crew, longhaul pilots, checkin staff and ground staff. Not one day was lost to industrial action. Its amazing what a difference it makes when management work with their staff rather than against them. Well done JB and his team.

If DJ accepts every demand, then in 10-15 years time, they will be at exactly the same crossroad as Qantas.

It will be interesting to see if things are rosy then, or "Steve Pinhead V4" is running the roost and decides DJ isn't being shaked by their employees enough.

It's sad to see the huge price differences in wages between DJ and QF.... Supposedly a huge "expose" on Today Tonight tomorrow. Watch ALAEU's reputation with consumers drop significantly.

At least this means there won't be any of the Today Tonight watching riff-raff on QF.

It helped that they did not ask for as much as Qantas staff.

This guy is a Joke, I like Qantas and I am booked to fly 20 December to Japan, family has connecting flights from all over Australia. Why is it OK for this nob to threaten my holiday. Union reps like this are a thing of the past, stop blaming the employer because your demands are unreasonable, work on an outcome that is fully costed, reasonable and affordable or see your members jobs head OS.

Both my kids are A Techs, they believe the future of their job prospects is being threatened by this action.
