I'm already IHG Gold and I have the option to register for a Platinum challenge when I log into my account.

I don't think they've thought this through properly.

This prompted me to check because I missed out by one night on getting Platinum last year and I vaguely remember I got an email about it but I'm now Platinum and the banner says that my status is valid to January 2022. I wonder if I'll ever be able to use it.

Well, if you are going to look at the promotion through the prism of a Victorian, then perhaps. But given hotels are getting back to trying to get customers, you'll be seeing more promotions coming through..
