I'll do whatever it takes to avoid Emirates Economy on the 773.

Great report, and a good reminder about what Y is like on EK. It's been nearly 10 years since I flew with them but vowed never again. These days I'll happily pay the extra to fly SQ who operate their 777's with a 3-3-3 layout.

This x a million IMO :D
Have just completed a return trip in EK A380 Y SYD-AKL. Both Shrek and I agreed it was just tolerable for a short flight but no way either of us would travel medium or long haul sitting 10 across.
Personally I'd rather stay home.

I've done that trip a few times. It seemed ok but the service was always a bit distant. The EK lounge in AKL is a bit different to the QF one too, in some ways good in others not so.

I have spent many hours imagining building Japanese style cubical sleep areas in the cabin. Heck, after once being shown the crew sleep area - I would be happy to pay for one of those bunks.
Bunk bed would be nice.

I wouldn't think LCCs would go for bunk bed type seating. Think sardine can.

Being PER based I have had the pleasure (?) of EK 777s about 12 times on the Kangaroo run to LHR since the Qantas/ Emirates code sharing.

Always fly Y and just to get best seats (195cm tall).

Some comments, suggestions and issues:

I am QFF points rich (600k) and usually hit 500 SCs annually so do what I can with QFF Silver.

Cannot upgrade with QFF points on PER-DXB leg due to terms of the agreement.

When booking you flight all Y seats except the emergency exits are bookable.

Can grovel for an emergency exit as long as you get in early - I usually arrive at PER 3 hours before my flight, do my standard grovel, get my booked seat changed to emergency exit and head to the Q lounge (QC member).

Tougher on the return leg DXB-PER as often not a 3 hour connection after arriving LHR-DXB - probably had a 75% success rate on emergency exits this way though had seats next to me locked out a couple of times.

I always take QF 380s for the DXB-LHR & return legs so book the row 80 window seats or cough up for an emergency exit seat if they are not available.

Upgraded with points to business once when nothing available and 4 times flew PER-MEL or SYD- DXB - LHR to go all QF metal but gave it away because the extra 10 odd hours made it such a pain.

If I have leg room I can survive Y to LHR because I have learned the knack of sleeping for most of the flight - noise suppressing headphones are a must on EK Y for that.

And a a final cough - I wish both EK and QF would load a new series of Big Bang Theory - same series for 2 years now and you can only watch so many repeats!!

Any op-ups?

Same configuration on EK422 DBX to PER.
Worst Economy trip ever...even our one and only Air Asia Economy PER to KUL was more roomy than this flight.
One day will try the "pointy end", but not fussed flying about them again in a hurry

You do realise D7 cram 9-across on a 330. Not my idea of fun

None offered (and I have asked as well). If you are booked QF flying EK, EK don't gain anything and QF seems to be a zero op-up policy unless something weird happens :(

Last op-up I had was SIN - LHR when an emergency seat died due to a low flying attendant tipping coffee on my seat and the back was full - up to business . Was about 5 years ago (series 5 of Big Bang Theory if I remember right).

Chris

So it looks like I will have my first ever EK Y flight later this year MEL-SIN:(
I will be travelling with SWMBO, is it worth it to pick some of the coupled seats at the back of the cabin (row 46-49)?
The 6PM departure won me over, but I regret booking already...

Wasn't looking when I booked it ... SYD-CHC on EK in Y (one-way). Thankfully then only a short flight.
So I now wonder is a QF 737 a better option. This EK flight will be my first non A380 with them.
The EK flight has a more civilised schedule.

So I now wonder is a QF 737 a better option.

No EK 777 better than QF 737. Whilst undoubtedly A380 and most 777's in 3-3-3 configuration are better I think some times people do go a bit drama-queen about the EK 777s. For a short hop to CHC they are fine, according to seat guru the seats are only 0.2" (0.5cm) narrower than QF 737 but seat pitch is 32" vs 30" on the 737 - so more or less the same width but extra legroom.

And now I find myself contemplating Emirates economy 10 across on 777 instead of QF A330!
