I don't know about OOL, but MEL had land around it excluded from development, but then someone allowed development despite known flight paths. Now the people that bought into those developments now whinge about plane noise. I don't live directly under a flight path, but i know it's around 2am when i see EK408 in the west.

Any stats on how many diversions happen from OOL to BNE a year?

The article says two flights were diverted over the summer causing chaos.....chaos really? Two flights out of hundreds does not seem to bad

If the IIROPS were JQ flights, would you accept "chaos" Mrmaxwell?;)

ILS approach will mean the aircraft will track over land significantly moreso than currently. There will be a lot of houses subject to.aircraft noise which currently are not.

Of course but this is Queensland not the socialist south!!

Gold Coast airport recently took out ads in Gold Coast bulletin to provide some information about the proposed ILS. Thought people may be interested in reading about it. I'll post this as images from the ad, and try to copy/paste the text as well.

The reliability of flights is Gold Coast Airport’s key consideration in the proposed introduction of an
Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the airport.

The ILS is a well-established, industry standard technology that improves an aircraft’s ability to land during adverse
weather conditions, rather than being diverted to other airports.

Gold Coast Airport understands the community’s concerns and is committed to working with Airservices Australia to
minimise the use of the ILS in fine weather conditions.

The proposed introduction of the ILS has attracted some debate in the community. We would like to clarify some
important facts to help you understand what it might mean for you and for travellers to and from the Gold Coast.

The facts are:
  • An average of 10,000 passengers a year are diverted from Gold Coast Airport due to adverse weather.
These diversions cost approximately $50,000 per flight – a cost that ultimately is passed on to air travellers, and impacts the reputation of the Gold Coast as a premier tourist destination.

  • The proposed ILS would require a new flight path to be approved to the north of the Gold Coast.
  • The primary reason a pilot would choose to use the ILS is to safely navigate in adverse conditions. It does not make commercial sense for pilots approaching from the south to use the ILS under fine weather conditions.
  • At present, there are on average 55 flights a day arriving at Gold Coast Airport, of which five can be expected to use the ILS as assumed in the environment assessment of 10% usage.
  • Of these five flights, three arrive from northern international airports and are required to use the ILS, regardless of weather conditions, due to specific Australian flight regulations for international aircraft.
  • Gold Coast Airport will work with the local community, Airservices Australia and the airlines to develop a Noise Abatement Procedure to reduce potential noise impacts on residential areas.
  • Gold Coast residents and their families who are regular air travellers will benefit from improved flight reliability and reduced diversions.

14 community information sessions on the proposed ILS will be held in coming weeks.

Frankly as JB747 has said it would have been better to think first and ask pilots. Sometimes people only care about the cost. At the end of the day safety should overide that.
