We are going to be in London for a month starting about a week before the Olympics start.
Is anyone going to be around before it gets hectic for dinners and drinks?

We will be down in Canary Wharf area of East London with fast access to the DLR and the Underground.

Cove, I think you know my answer!! :p

I'm in Russell Square from the 12th July

I'll be around. I work in the square mile and live in Putney so can do drinks anywhere in central London. I'll be dropping in to whatever QF do in St James' once or twice. Got 5 lots of tickets though so I will be at the Games every now and then.

We get to London on July 19th and leaving on July 21st. Will be in Trafalgar Square. First time to London for me, so looking forward to it!

We received our Olympic football tickets at Manchester Old Trafford today - delivered by Royal Mail (they emailed and sms saying tickets would be delivered today, and when they were delivered, another email and sms saying tickets were delivered). They gave us seats right back of the stadium on the top tier! So, not sure if we will be able to see anything or action? I guess, we will just soak in the atmosphere instead!

Cove: looking forward to catching up with you & Mrs Cove. However, we will not be in London from 20th to 23rd July. After that, we will stay put.

Transiting through LHR on the day of the opening ceremony will be bad enough for me!

Looks like we can do a get together as Flashware gets back in time and his Fiona is recovering well. Nick and Myrna please tell us where we should hook up as we don't know much about most of London.

Ponce I get settled next week I'll see where we can meet.. Somewhere in the west end I think?

We are very flexible, so will be happy to meet up at the place suggested. Hope the live music is not too loud so we can talk. We are near Canary Wharf and cove's apartment.

The live music is only in the basement so shouldn't be an issue on the ground floor or upstairs. There are several areas that are perfect for small groups actually. (And even though it says it is split over twelve levels, some levels are only a couple of steps above each other rather than being a full floor or storey higher).

I'm more than happy to book a spot (if they are taking bookings over the Olympics) and let the AFF Mods know so they can throw it out there to others, similar to one of the Oz events.

We're in London right now. It is so busy with Tourists. I can't iimagine what it will be like when the athletes and associated fans arrive. Traffic chaos. The weather needs to improve though, rain yesterday and today and more to come tomorrow.

That's London for you - always packed with tourists (even in winter), and rains. I have often asked the same question - How is it going to cope when the Olympics come? It did rain most of today, but has been fine since this afternoon. Tomorrow we are going to the Hampton Court Palace flower show, and rains have been forecast so we will bring umbrellas and ponchos! There have been floodings in parts of the UK. More rains are said to come this weekend. Enjoy your time in London.

Any suggestions on what sort of clothing to bring? My first time to London and the rest of my destinations will be very hot, so unsure of what to pack for there for only 3 days!

While it has been raining in London, it is not cold because it is summer here after all. It is quite humid during the day, and even in the evenings. Just bring a jumper, pullover or light jacket, if you feel cold. The main things to bring are an umbrella and a rain poncho (a cheap plastic one for places where an umbrella is awkward).

When are you coming? If here for the Olympics, then who knows what the weather will be then. But, if you are coming soon, rains have been forecast for this weekend and next week. It has also been raining in parts of Europe as well. My sister is in Munich and she said it has been raining on and off there as well.

Layers. As Myrna said, it isn't cold but say a long sleeve t shirt is enough warmth. And when the sun comes out, even briefly then it is hot and humid. Sun is out now at 6.40 pm. See what the people are wearing at Wimbledon Sunday for an idea.

Indeed, indeed. Looking forward to getting out and about!

Can I suggest The Porterhouse in Covent Garden? Easy to get to and easy to find. Great bar too.

Oh.. spent many a messy night there. Let's not hope for a repeat

I'm just on a train back to London now, was lucky I was on one of the services that hasn't had any delays/cancellations. A lot of other services on this line have been! Phew!
