Was good for me (178cm) & a shorter MrsB who used her carryon as a footrest.

I'm shorter than you, so it should work out well. Never used my carry-on as a footrest but it looks like I'll have room at the bulkead to try this time!

Her next holiday will be without the children. The grandparents will look after them.

That seems unduly harsh on the children. JQ's performance was hardly their fault. Why not fly a different airline with the children? If not taking the children, presumably she will still fly JQ....

Harsh on the children? What about the grandparents?

Joking aside, you are right that the children shouldn't be punished for incompetence by JQ. My quoted post implies a causality between the JQ troubles and the decision to travel without the children next time, while it is only a contributing factor. This decision was made mainly because the parents wanted an adult getaway to attend yet another wedding and the need to keep the cost down. They will fly QF to Manila this time.

Some cabin crew frown on carryon as footrest. Their issue is that carryon need to be under seat in front or in overhead lockers. Even when seat belt signs turned off.

Im not sure if thats a requirement or just a cabin crew having a bad day. Its happened to me at a bulkhead seat

Logic surely dictates that it should be fine in a bulkhead seat, but not fine in an exit row! At least that's my way of thinking.

Did the return from NRT last night in 1C again. Traffic through the curtain was busy at times. I think 1G looked quieter.
Checked the foot space again - maybe around 4" gap (not 6") when sitting more upright. Feet touching the bulkhead when in recline (but it didn't feel restrictive). I think I read where somebody put pillows or a blanket in the magazine holder on the bulkhead to make a footrest.
Last night the champagne was Piper Heidsieck NV. They just need an appropriate glass.
However, LCC T3 at Narita is to be avoided. 30 minutes for bag drop & 30 minutes for security (no fast track) and then no Lounge. So, good in-cabin, but very un-premium ground services (at NRT). QF Y+ next time.

I have flown with JQ ever since QF stopped its DH8 services to BNK. The flight to Sydney is only 1hr20' and much more manageable than the Saab 340s that Kendell used to operate in the days of Ansett. You can put up with anything for 1hr20' and flights to/from BNK have a good on time record. I have flown SYD - SIN and SYD - HNL and vice versa a number of time in JQ business and I have found the service and seating to be quite comfortable. I would never fly economy on a long haul JQ overseas flight.

Are you talking about champagne as defined by the French or just bubbly in general? I don't think you will find Veuve Clicquot on JQ!

Champagne not sparkling. Hence my surprise. . The champagne mentioned was Piper Heidsieck.

My advice with JQ: Don't set your expectations too high and you won't be disappointed. You may even be pleasantly surprised!

I am finding that with getting my refund back. Clearly I should not have expected them to follow their own Customer charter about efficient processing of refunds.
