Booked J SYD LHR via HKD of course, AUD 78XX return, it is the same price if you do a s/o in HKG.

However, if you just book SYD HKG J, is about 6xx_, not so much difference, however you miss another 24 hrs of J time, and UK visit.

If you just book HKG LHR, it is about 47xx_ HKD, which is about 78XX AUD, implying the SYD HKG J leg is free ?

why is that ? do they favour Australian fliers so much ?

No - they don't favour Australian flyers, they are trying to encourage (be competitive for) the end-to-end AU-EU route.

For flights to HKG only, where the passenger is terminating, they know they have one of only two options (the other being QF). So they can charge what they thing they can get away with. But for AU-EU there are literally a couple dozen (or more) options. Some extremely well priced for a good product.

So they want a share of that market.

Similarly for the HKG-LHR route - only three airlines fly that (IIRC) - VS, BA, CX. So they charge a premium.

You'll find this pricing not just for CX via HKG, but for just about all flights anywhere. Try AU-DXB - the same, if not more expensive on QF and EK than flying beyond DXB to Europe (again, for the latter, where competition kicks in).

As MEL says, exactly the same on many other carriers.

SYD-AUH will cost exactly the same (give or take) as SYD-LHR, despite being double the distance.

thanks for the explanation, I had a look at same flights , same periods, but different origin city, so starts from LHR to SYD via HKD instead, return only AUD 5,000 !!
now I understands why are there so many Brits flying CX J... because it is very cheap for them.
