Interesting discussion about Airline Industry regulation/freq flyer programs

So not a single person here had any opinion at all about the airline industry from the guy whom helped invent loyalty schemes? Or was this already discussed in an earlier thread that I missed?

Thanks, I just saw this link and have watched the first part. Some very interesting comments about the results of deregulation in the industry in the US. Obviously Crandall comes from an older corporate mindset in this, particularly the link between air travel and public policy, but this doesn't make it invalid in any way.

I look forward to watching the rest.
 
He’s a has-been protectionist, with possible fascist and Marxist tendencies.

When asked about successful airlines, he can’t even bring himself to name the only investment grade airline in the USA.

Begrudgingly he mentions Southwest towards the end of the interview, but only briefly and in relation to their decision to offer a complimentary checked bag allowance. (Using any measure of investor, customer or employee satisfaction, you can’t discuss the industry in the USA without mentioning the powerhouse that is Southwest, but this guy considers “service” to be the only level on which to judge an airline, forget about return on investment and "what" customers are actually willing to pay for, let alone how much they are will pay.)

This former CEO has nothing to offer market based airlines of the twenty first century; he is a great legacy of his time, who has failed to adapt.
 
Yes I know its a bit long. I disagreed with a lot of what he said but it was an interesting conversation about the pro's and cons of deregulation. The benefits are pretty clear and measurable but some of the cons were maybe not predicted that well?
