Interesting ways to go from Frankfurt to Casablanca

I booked a 9 day tour of Morocco this morning for Sept 2025. Flights aren't available yet, but it looks like SIN-FRA J will be what I end up booking.

I'm flexible on dates and will probably fly in to Frankfurt with at least 5 days to amuse myself.

How would you use that time to get from Frankfurt to Casablanca? Train to Paris? Flight to Barcelona then make my way south and get a ferry to North Africa? Tunisia for a few days?

We are flying to Morocco from London via Lisbon, with a stopover there. Really depends how long your tour is and where it starts. But train is fast and efficient in Morocco, so even if you get the ferry across to Tangiers it’s pretty easy to travel onwards from there.

Tunisia for a few days?

I'd vote for some time in Tunisia, esp if you are into history. Tunis has Carthage and the Punic port. Dougga is a large Roman town and a terrific day trip from Tunis.

LH flies to Tunis and RAM onwards to Casablanca. Be prepared to be disappointed in Casablanca.

The going rate for a Tajine chicken / beef with prunes is 50-70DH. It’s sizzling hot so helps with ensuring you eat well and avoid getting sick

The tram rides are 8DH and can be paid with a credit card
The street scenes are culturally very different

Endless bureaucracy at the airport at both entry and exit was just ridiculous. Talk about over engineered… every gate with a gate-keeper who had to eyeball your departure boarding pass and two separate security checks

And hotels tracking your every move for the government
During the 2 week stay there was no govt bureaucracy

With any luck hosting the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal will change these “rules” for the better - it ought be simpler than it was.

Oh, and then there was entrepreneurial spirit of small business. Nothing had a price tag. It’s whatever the vendor thought they could charge (sounds familiar ? Same seat, many prices for fares)
And the sense of begging
And little kids selling stuff at midnight. That’s heart wrenching

For me, arrival and departure at Casablanca airport last year was no worse than comparable countries. Departure was much easier than say Cairo. I imagine the risk is greater there though.

Other than the grand mosque which is impressive, Casablanca is not that great. Rest of the country I visited was wonderful especially the smaller towns/cities.

Riads were much better than hotels, for us anyway.

Yes there is poverty, beggars, cons and spivs, but that is pretty common in Africa ( and elsewhere).

Rabat is small, but pretty good (and a new airport I think). We booked a restaurant in the Medina and were told to meet a guy on a corner at the edge of the Medina and he would take us there. Got there at dusk and it was all pretty grotty and run down. Guy appears, carrying a lantern. Leads us through many sus back-alleys by lantern-light and we were a bit worried. But delivered to the place, through ordinary front door to a blazing, opulently decorated riad around a courtyard and fountain. Absolute feast, about seven courses.

Morocco will give you many surprises like that.
