Hi, I am transiting at BKK from SYD to HAN (QF to VN) for 3 hours on 2 separate tickets. I will have hand luggage and hoping to check in online. Do I still need to go through immigration to catch the VN flight at BKK?

It depends.

If you can get your VN BP online then no. If not, you may be able to get past the transit security by showing your VN itinerary and getting a BP at the departures transfer desk (which I've done on the odd occasion).

Otherwise it's enter Thailand and check in at the landside desks.

I connected CX to LH at BKK mid year. I didn’t have a physical or digital boarding pass for the LH flight, so must have got through transit security somehow… I’m guessing it must have been a mobile screenshot or something.

Then made my way to the LH transfer desk.

So definitely ‘doable’ without a BP!
