Turned out all of my concerns were unfounded. All of the USA customs/entry clearance stuff happens in a dedicated US Departures area at Calgary airport. By the time you get on the plane you are effectively "in the USA". My bags were checked all the way through to Sydney from Calgary. At SFO I stepped straight out into the domestic arrivals area with no security to pass what-so-ever. It was about a 10 minute walk to the Qantas departures security area at Terminal A, and with relatively short queues there I was in the BA First lounge within 25 minutes of jumping off the United/Skywest flight from Calgary.
