I have recently booked return flights to Japan using my frequent flyer points. Will my Citibank gold visa (which includes free travel insurance)cover me in case of any flight cancellations? The wording seems a little vague on this.

If not, can anyone provide a personal recomendation for this kind of travel cover? Thanks!

It's best to give them a call or better still get it in writing. Insurance companies have a habit of rejecting claims.

I personally would prefer to pay for a policy. Like the saying "you get what you paid for"

It's better to be extra careful and avoid dangerous situations so you don't have to lodge claim.

Have a safe trip and Good Luck! :D

I would be inclined to think that they won't cover you. From my understanding the card related travel insurance would only apply if you had booked the trip using the card.
If you asking them ands they respond favourably I would insist on the answer in writing as another consultant could easily give you a different answer :!:

With the Citibank Gold card, I think you're out of luck.

I don't have a copy of the insurance terms and conditions on me, but I recall Platinum card holders are covered provided they recently transfered points (from their card) across to QF. Obviously the flights would need to be redeemed though QF as well

I had a similar issue last year when I made a QF award flight CBR-SYD-JFK, then a separate Concorde award. Not only was I covered for the award flight (because I transferred Citibank points to QF before I redeemed my flight) - but also for the Concorde and UK/Paris for myself and wife. Apparently, as long as you're covered for your outbound sector from Australia, your whole trip is covered (up to 3 months or so).

Now, getting confirmation from Citibank/Zurich that you're covered - that's anouther story...

Bill, the joys of travelling....had a trip to USA from 27 December, arrived back 11 January. Back 2 days, first trip to MEL and SYD started Tuesday 13 January, back to BNE on Saturday.

First time I've been back on AFF since my trip; but I've been on FlyerTalk throughout (where I could find computer access during my trip).

Citibank provide a booklet on your insurance cover, at the time you first get your card.
They recommend, that you take the booklet with you on your trip, as it constitutes the 'policy' of insurance. They also recommend taking your credit card receipt (for airfare) and or monthly statement.
In regard to being covered at all..... if you paid for your airfare with your CB card (regardless of grade), then CB (Zurich Insurance Ltd.) will cover you for the benefits as specified in the booklet.
Obviously, Platinum card holders get a higher level of cover than do Gold or Silver.

regards....
