Let us not forget the one post wonders also.  :p
There's been a real surge in the number of 'hit and runs' lately. Someone appear from nowhere with a strange grievance (real or imagined), signs up for an account specifically so they can slag off the company in question, then disappears, never to be heard from again.

Happens on all travel type forums.Sad really as you do tend to get a bit cynical.

Not just travel related for that matter.

I prefer when sites have policies against this, though realise there are limitations. Unfortunately some sites, such as Tripadvisor (in a travel context) are going the opposite way. :-(

Yeah, it does happen, I see it all the time on FlyerTalk as well, but it seems like it's happening a lot on this forum lately. There's another very similar thread going on right now.

Tripadvisor is notorious for one hit wonders.

I ignore any reviews on Tripadvisor that include the following:

  • "I have stayed at many 5 star resorts in the world"
    • Yet have reviews for 2-4 star hotels
    • Have no other reviews except the hotel they are complaning about

  • "I have had the luxury of staying at most hotels in (insert city name here)"

  • Less then 2 reviews

  • Only signed up in the past month.

  • Every other review has been a whinge or a complaint

While people usually only complain (instead of complement) hence they sign up, complain and never come back. With so many vested interests from hotels and associated businesses and travel companies. I just ignore 1 or 2 hit wonders on that site.

During the good times (for Qantas) when international points upgrades into Business Class were hard to come by, there was a lady on here who would only post to complain when she didn't get an upgrade! - misifit or was it hissifit was her name?

We haven't had many complaints like this of last as most if not all are getting their upgrades.

I'll 'fess up to being a one-hit wonder on tripadvisor (it was a complimentary review, IIRC). No reason other than not having the bother/time to post more reviews (I should post there more often, after all, I make use of the site, I may as well contribute to it).

I do agree one needs to take the reviews with a grain of salt, and have some personal system/method of interpreting the reviews and the trends of reviews for a particular property.

I don't have set 'rules' as per above, but I do try and interpret the overall results and look out for things where the guest's expectations are clearly unrealistic, or the problem could not be blamed on the hotel, or they obviously caught a staff member on a 'bad hair' day.

As far as this site goes, yep, I see many first posts and the 'troll' alarm bells start ringing...correctly I think in many cases, unnecessarily in some others.

I'm philosophical about it...if a troll is getting it off reading many replies to their post (which, let me assure you, was typed with one hand), including mine, then sobeit. Not going to worry me unduly.

I think I'm OT! :shock::lol:

Ditto, i find trends are important moreso than individual complaining reviews (or individual gushing reviews). I also find that I find where the reviewer comes from a factor I take into account, I often place more weight on Australian reviewers than others.

Personally I have posted 3 or 4 reviews (and these are not too hard to find ) I'm largely motivated by sharing positive experiences - ie credit where credit is due - than whinging unless there was a complete mismatch of expectations and experience.

And some 3 post wonders on Flyertalk. ;) I was reading a thread there recently on getting a taxi in Manila from the airport into Makati and the person who started the thread then had 2 other posts in that thread with the last post being something along the lines of "I will let you know how we go and I will post a trip report". Hmmm....

Possibly. But then I suppose an apology would probably be too much to ask for.

You won't find too many people doing that.

Some however, are just stubborn. I give the example of the idiot on the FT QF forum who threw up a ruckus about QF/AS then claimed the red rat is the worst airline in the world.

Ever heard of the expression, "dumb as a post"? Well, apparently posts are pretty stubborn too...
