Next Generation Check-in from Qantas

We are embarking on a groundbreaking project to redefine the airport experience for you.
The first step of this exciting new era of innovation is to create the airport terminals of the future, right here in Australia with the launch of Next Generation Check-in. ...

Where to Next

In a multi-phased rollout commencing in Perth this winter, we're introducing Next Generation technology into the domestic terminals. It's an ambitious project, involving world-first technology. But at the same time, it's one that will deliver enhanced levels of personalised customer care.

Look for more information on this exciting project right here, each month.

Little we don't know, obviously a work in progress.

Nothing new.

Of all airports they had to start the trial with, it was Perth. Damn hope it works over there.

The lines "streamline your journey through the airport" and "unprecedented recognition to our most Frequent Flyers" has me categorically concerned.

But presumably that means we'll all be provided with RFID chips (etc.) -- that's what we understand it will be, yeah? -- in the meantime? I mean, Perth might not be my homebase, but I'm planning on at least two trips there in the next couple of months and I'd like very much to check it out :)

Come to think of it, I have a domestic sector coming up next week in PER as well (red-eye, though).

Don't know if I'll be caught in the beta crossfire, but we'll see :)

Is it just me or does it feel like the announcement does not really announce anything?

Don't we all, somewhere like MEL, SYD or even BNE would have been a better idea though, QF will never cease to amaze me with the things they do:rolleyes:

To be completely fair, the big three you mentioned are just that. Rolling a guinea pig project out on one of the big kahuna cities is probably asking for trouble (general rule of thumb for any testing stage of any given project ).

They could have at least chosen CBR or ADL!

Josh,

Starting it in BME would have been better as the further away from the busy routes the better.

You do not want them to trial a new system in the busiest ports as that would be very bad if things went pear shaped.

I look forward to the new check-in system being rolled out once they have it perfect.

You also do not want them to trial a new system in a port which is already in a PER...err, I mean, pear...shape:!: :p

A source tells me that you will just swipe your QFF card at a check-in machine with the difference being someone behind the counter will greet you by name ala American Airlines style. "Hello Mr XYZ. Nice to see you again. Enjoy your flight to XYZ today." kinda stuff. The boarding pass will be done away with also. There are rumours about preferential security ala US style also... When you travel business or first in the US, they really seem to invoke the class system :p, own security lines, priority boarding, etc. etc. No fraternising with the riff-raff ;)

RFID bag tags will be interesting to see. The true miracle of flight is your bag arriving at the same destination as you and at the same time . Many true frequent flyers like myself however, don't actually check in bags (even internationally), so won't make an ounce of difference.

I do love iPhone check in already, except for no seat selection - I mean, c'mon guys, how hard can it be?!?:-|

Saw this the other day when I logged in but wasn’t sure if it had already been posted and was too lazy to search.

At least it’s not too long till next month when we may find out something else useful to us.

Point taken, well why not try the one with only 2 flights a day, HBA:!:

Probably wouldn’t get enough feedback to work out potential issues at other ports. At least with a fairly large city there should be all sorts of variables to help work every issue out.

It's obvious that I'm not going to win this one, back to dormant watchman position:mrgreen:

Didn't even see it on site - the link was in my monthly emailed QFF statement.

I lie actually, it wasn’t when I logged in, but one of the buttons near the bottom of the front page that scrolls to the right over time. I think it was the first button.

Actually CBR would limit any stuff ups.. Personally I would trial it in NZ. They have a very high percentage of experimental technologies globally.

Trialling in any high traffic area risks bottlenecking the system operationally. Read - commercial damage.

cheers
