Today we have announced that our new Airbus A330 Sydney-Perth service will commence operation on 26 May 2011, subject to regulatory approvals.

Virgin Blue Group of Airlines Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director John Borghetti said: “For the first time in almost a decade, travellers will have a choice in Business Class within the Australian domestic market. With our excellent service, luxury leather seating, 62 inch Business Class seat pitch, multi-channel in-flight entertainment and our range of high quality meals designed by Luke Mangan, Virgin Blue’s Airbus A330 service will provide an unparalleled experience in Australian skies.”
“We will be offering very competitive fares on the new service, bringing competition back to Business Class travel as well as continuing to provide great value in Economy Class. Today Virgin Blue is launching special Economy Class fares from $139.00* one way booked on the internet between Sydney and Perth and, as an introductory offer for Business Class guests, we will provide complimentary limousine* transfers to and from
Sydney Airport for the all inclusive price of $1399.00* one way booked on the internet between Sydney and Perth.

“We have developed a schedule that provides convenient departure and arrival times for corporate and leisure guests. The service commences from Sydney to Perth on 26 May 2011 with an 8.00am departure from Sydney, followed by a 1.00pm departure from Perth later that day. From July we will operate a three times daily service, providing a total of more than 33,000 seats each week between the east coast and Perth.

“Our Airbus A330 service between Sydney and Perth is just the beginning of the roll out of our new business and Economy Class product to our domestic network. Today’s announcement marks another step forward in our Game Change Program, which will see us become the airline of choice in the Australian business and leisure markets,” Mr. Borghetti said.

Great news! Timing look good too.

Wonder if the a/c will be in new livery by start of service. Wouldn't want them offline for painting straight after introduction!

Price-wise it's ok. The limo transfers in Sydney are also a big bonus, however I wonder what kind of restrictions will apply. Free Gold is a nice touch also...but a tad useless.

Did we ever answer the 2x2x2 or 2x3x2 question?

Still no mention if the seating config is 2-2-2 or 2-3-2. If you look closeley at the photo, the Cabin Crew is holding the bottle of wine so it is covering the new Virgin name on the seat... Sneaky!

Looking forward to seeing more details as they become available..

The Gold upgrade isn't really that much of a benefit - if you're flying J, you're getting lounge access, priority checkin, etc already.

And 2 returns @ $1399 each segment = $5596. If you were Velocity red that would net 27,980 SCs or if you were Silver, 33,576. You're past halfway to Gold anyway just on those flights!

From what I can deduce some key differences:

- Closed loop IFE (doubt its Red, if it was Red this would have been widely publicised)
- On red-eye Light supper offering then breakfast on arrival
- Espresso machine

Though something hints to me is being exEK the espresso machine came as is, wonder if the new fleet will have them standard?

Point being your not halfway, you become gold for a lot less than what it would cost normally, now if the offer also allows requal ;).

I would be very suprised if it wasen't RED, however I agree with your point saying it would have been widely publicised, they seem to be just saying the good bits at the moment, not saying anything else.

Does anyone know what IFE the EK aircraft have? I'm sure if it was the Panasonic system, or something close, a quick software update for re-branding is all that is needed.

Went on an EK 332 'vintage' like this one few years ago, I believe it was closed loop but this was way back in 2005, not sure if things changed since.

Also read elsewhere they were in heated discussions with Panasonic regarding IFE pricing... in an article about the BSI.
