I’m in the middle of an AAdvantage flight from EDI (j) xAUH SYD (f) on Etihad. Two seperate tickets as AA only allow QF and QR via the ME on one ticket.

The flight from EDI to AUH was cancelled yesterday and after a bit of stuffing around Etihad sorted out a hotel in EDI for Saturday night.

I called AA and updated them (don’t get me started on the Etihad call centre or the EDI on-the-ground support) and they changed the AUH-SYD flight to Monday from Saturday (unfortunately no F left but J is ok)

Anyhoo - I’m sitting in AUH now with EY telling me that no, they don’t have to provide a hotel (12 hour wait) since it’s on two tickets even through it’s their fault cancelling the connecting flight.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this correct? I know BA were doing something like this a few years ago.

Thanks

Edit: at least I’ll get 600EUR EC261 but still...

With two separate tickets the original carrier would be required to provide you with assistance prior to their flight, but not subsequent to it. This is consistent with the advice given. You may be eligible for EU261 for the first sector, and your travel insurance may cover the delay in AUH (hotel and meals).

you could potentially make a claim for delay under the Montreal Convention, claiming the cost of hotel in AUH. But (a) probably not an easy course of action and (b) the airline has a lesser duty to you than EU261 and (c) as the cost of the delay only results from an onward (and separate) ticket, the Convention may not cover it.

I agree - separate tickets - no duty if care at AUH.

Hopefully TI will cover the accommodation.

But if not exceptional circumstances for the EDI delay the EU261/2004 compensation is due.
