Dirty blankets reused by China Southern Airlines, laundry workers claim | News.com.auquote]
  • Dirty airline blankets allegedly reused
  • Laundry workers claim only 20pc washed
  • Airline investigating the claims
AIRLINE passengers may think twice about covering up with a blanket on their next flight amid claims many are not washed.

China Southern Airlines is investigating its laundry service after workers claimed they washed just 20 per cent of blankets used by passengers and that no disinfectants were used.
Insiders at the Beijing Yingtailong Airline Appliance Co allege that only airline blankets with obvious stains were washed, with the rest being packed for reuse, according to local media.
More than 2000 blankets, 3000 towels and dozens of sheets were sent for washing each day, a figure that the workers say is way beyond the laundry’s capacity. In reality about 500 of these items were washed, according to the workers.
Workers claim that although the airline is supposed to conduct random checks, none had happened for several months.

"We decided whether the blankets needed to be washed or not," a worker told the Beijing Times.
China Southern Airlines has launched an investigation into the claims.
"Our Beijing unit is investigating the issue and Yingtailong denied what the media report said," a spokesman for China Southern, the country's largest carrier by fleet size, said.
The laundry company says it will also conduct an inquiry and correct any irregularities found.
It says it follows rules and requirements of handling textile goods on planes.

Not to mention the appalling safety record the Chinese airlines have!

Which Chinese airlines?

Just flew 3 flights on CA... (1 fatal accident ever?).. and while it wasn't up to OZ/SQ/NZ etc in business it was perfectly acceptable... and no doubt as safe as virtually any other major airline...

If it isn't, how come the unexceptional record?

No a fan of such generalisations.

If the price was right I'd probably fly them. Keeping status and trying to consolidate FFP credits does bias my decision a lot (but that's usually because the price difference is not humungous).

The airline websites for these carriers, even in Chinese, are pretty poor when it comes to booking.

In any case, people might be disgusted by the thought of handling a blanket which has only a mere 20% chance of being washed, but more would avoid an airline due to its safety record. So far, it doesn't seem like there's a huge problem (at least in terms of fatalities; other non-fatal incidents are another thing), especially with almost all carriers around the world - including the Chinese - using equipment manufactured by the notable big two.

I think KLM was flogging some Euro return airfares for less than $1700 return in some recent months, with the connecting flight from Australia being operated by China Southern. I can't say I wasn't tempted.

I have flown CA (Air China) and also been getting on/off/transit CAN a number of times. CA is well, quite average in services (no IFE on J, just bigger seats and average food) but it does get you on time and are quite safe.

If transitting internationally at CAN there aren't that much stuff to do in terminal, and the prices of duty free is not cheap. Most J/F pax would use the China Southern Lounge or the Premium Lounge (linked together), which whilst not great, is certainly not packed with passengers so it is quite quiet.

I would avoid CI (China Airlines, based in Taiwan) though. It had quite poor safety record.

For some perspective it's probably worth comparing the Chinese Carriers Safety Stats against North American carriers.

I would be suprised if the China figures were worse

:shock: they are worse, what a surprise.

I don't see that from these figures - I see approx 9 Adj Fatal Events for Chinese carriers (that is ones from China not all of Asia).

North American Carriers have around 25 adj fatal events.

Which "China" ? Greater China (including Taiwan and therefore China Airline that drags figures down). The China that which includes the SAR's and therefore CX and KA which boost figures. Or just Mainland China?

Need to look at things like the number of flights as well.

Just highlighting that China is not an 'island' for fatalities whichever way you spin it

Is anyone game to fly Air China/China Southern etc etc?...............ABNSOLUTELY

I have absolutely ZERO hesitation in flying any of the Chinese mainland carriers.

Annually I would take up to 50 odd internal flights with Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Shanghai Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, Tianjin Airlines - whichever I need to get from city to city. I NEVER have safety concerns - the problems encoutered are puntuality and quality of product on board.

Have done 2 J flights with MU MEL-PVG this year also - interesting experiences quality wise - but for $2,300 I was not expecting too much.

Flew Air China a few years ago. Everything that's mentioned is true, and more.

I won't ever fly a Communist Chinese airline again.

But you can if you like.

Went with China Eastern (CEA) (J) to Europe in April this year. Not to bad, but the little things let them down. In particular they use Shanghai Airlines wet leased plane out of Melbourne. Old plane, bad security to coughpit, FA's English just OK, white wine was not chilled. do you want more. But CEA was good, on reflection nearly up with EK. But again it is the little things that let it down.

OK if you flew in April you might have struck a much sh*ttier plane than they now use.

Initially they were using 2 diff 737 from SA - one with 18 J seats and 0ne with 28 J seats I think. The one with 18 J seats was disgraceful where seats hardly reclined - they discontinued using that after so many complaints. The 28 J seat version is much better - although still VERY VERY old.

As for the wine not being cold - neither was the Taittinger Champagne - I complained about it being warm and they brought me a replacement 10 mins later that was as flat as a cough carters hat.

I went to the galley to check it was even champagne and they showed me how they poured it from the bottle into a large polystyrene cup full of ice and let it sit for 10 minutes before pouring it into a glass and bringining it to - that explained why it was so flat. After that episode as soon as I boarded it was straight to galley to show FA how to chill champagne first - oh I told them forget the white wine and beer - just get the champers cold.

We were on the 18 seat 767, it was pretty ordinary. I wrote to CEA in Shanghai, and laid out all the SA's problems. This included leaving the coughpit door open while in flight (I'm not joking) I had a very good look at the flight controls.
I don't think the Chinese get the concept of service, particularly in J class. As for the cold drinks, we stayed with the Red from France, MMMM very nice.

For the not too fussy traveller, their price competitiveness delivers good value. However, it would be wrong to discount them completely.

I tried, but failed. In hindsight, i'm glad as i dont think it would have been a positive experience if the way they treat their customers before travel is anything to go by.
