Is it possible to redeem awards booking for EK Flights not originating from Australia?

Considering there are no award availability from any port in Australia to DXB for 2023, is it possible to book e.g. DXB to CAI in my case which shows plenty of J Class availability online or do I have to call up Qantas? It doesn't seem to work via the Qantas Site. I am planning to purchase ticket from SYD to DXB with $$ and use points for my onward flight from DXB.

Try other airports then get a positioning flight. I couldn't find any availability even in Y booking several months ago BNE-DXB-IST. So I booked CGK-DXB-IST and used VA to DPS and will visit a couple islands in Indonesia for bird watching before going to Jakarta to get the EK flights.

What is the best way to see availability for flights from DXB (that can be booked with QFF points)?

One way to do it is to create a multi city search in Qantas where the first leg is an Australian flight.

Search for something like
SYD-MEL
DXB-CAI

This will let you search for availability on the DXB flight. Obviously you can't book it online as you don't want the first leg, but this lets you get past the restriction.
