Is Kris Flyer the best Star Alliance program for points usage

Hi,

Apologies for the n00b question.

I'm normally a OW traveller so I'm experimenting with the other side.
I've got a RTW J/Z trip on mainly *A flights and would like to use the points on another trip.

The family is OW for frequent flyers but we are doing a J RTW trip on a TG, LX & LH flights for half of the trip in Sep 12.
I was going to get everyone on KF to do a BNE-CHC visit for the snow in Jul/Aug 2013. About 25k in Y or 36k point in J return currently on Kris Flyer. I was going to use AMEX points to top up.
The trip is BNE-BKK in TG, BKK-xZRH-FCO in LX, LHR-xFRA-MCO in LH. All in business.
I've calculated about 15725 miles should give 19641 points with business (125%) loading on KF.
Using AA & QF across the US and home.
Not too worried about *A status, more just getting the next holiday organised!

Have you looked at Aegean's Miles&Bonus?

You achieve Blue status with 4000 miles and once you have collected 16,000 miles within one year from the date which you qualified to the Blue status you go Gold across *A... KrisFlyer requires 50,000.

You probably need to do the homework and compare earn/burns for your specific circumstances. My initial thoughts are Krisflyer is not that good, as you only get 25% bonus flying in business class. Some programs allows 2x pts in J class travelling on TG, LH & LX. Lufthansa does, I think Aegean does. If that is the case, you should have enough for return to CHC without need for topup. Also consider US or UA programs as they don't charge fuel surcharges (although not sure if you have to pay fuel surcharges anyway for NZ trans tasman).

I looked up the programs and the Kris Flyer doesn't come out that bad.
LH Miles and more is changing to 1.5x on J after 01 Sep 12. (I'm flying in Sep & Oct) and the J return point on BNE-CHC is 55,000. Compared to 36k via Kris Flyer.
UA wasn't much better.
Is Aegean related to the greek banks..... But is does look like the best deal. Still not sold...
