Reported as landed just 3 minutes late (not sure if that is on gate time or not though). Gives our intrepid traveller a red hot go.

:D

Hahah so…. To answer my own question, Qantas is not eligible for direct tx. So I was unable to make todays flight and will need to take my backup flight tomorrow evening. What ultimately tripped me up was my inability to online checkin because my vaccine certificate couldn’t be verified. Lmao.

Lame.

Glad I’ve given you all a bit of entertainment though 😂

To rub salt into the wound, I packed for summer and it’s 8 degrees here…

At least you didn't get hauled aside, like some of what we see on the BorderSecurity Canada tv show!
why would they be "hauled away"? Assuming a valid eTA which would have been checked on check in none of this is anything Canadian Border control(or whatever they're called) would be worried about.

I hate to say that you were all right.

But you were all right.
I really wish you'd made it

though from what you wrote the issue seemed to be more one of the covid vax cert and AC check in?

I'm curious did you try the online checkin before you left SYD? I am assuming so but just wanted to understand a bit more.

Yep - so a few things to consider.

I tried to online checkin in Sydney, but I didn’t want to do it untill I knew plane had a chance of making it on time. So I tried after I boarded and it didn’t recognise my vax - I tried a few more times and it said they would validate it in next 24 hours.

On checking my email in YVR, it didn’t validate said go to desk etc. there was no desk on arrivals side and the us connections needed a BP. They guy said Qantas wasn’t eligible, but since I had no bags, If I had a bp I speculate I would have been let through.

So I needed to go into Canada and then re-check in. Which I didn’t have time for etc etc.

Remarkably I was able to cancel my areoplan booking (a few minutes after dep time) and get full refund of points less about 100 in taxes.

phew!! I wondered about that part too!

thanks for explaining. sounds like the steps I would have taken myself tbh.

well enjoy your overnight stay I guess and your onward flight when you get there!

I've been hassled before on similar connection at YVR (but same ticket). Even where eligible you are still being processed by immigration so cannot assume you'll get straight through.

Yeah. Maybe next time. 😉
I’m flying home on AC33 In a few weeks. I could book a super tight, seperate ticket connection just for the lols.

Must be under MCT.
Alas, as I’m flying home on a J award, that would probably be outside of my risk tolerance.

Sorry to disappoint you all lmao.
