Is this status run good value for $$

Hi,
I need advise... I need 160 sc till next bonus of 8000 points before oct 31st.

I do need to go to Brisbane from Melbourne, then returning from gold coast to Melbourne next week.

I calculated I would get total 160 sc if I booked a j fare via Sydney each way.

so this cost is $1367 melb to bris
$ 649 gc to melb

Total $ 1983 airfare

For that I would get 8000 bonus points
5000 points for flights
3966 ( 2 points per $ spent on cc )

Therefore almost 17000 points for nearly $2000

Is this good value ?

Any better suggestions than what I have come up with?

not very good value at all in my opinion.. are you just trying to get the 8000 loyalty points or are you trying to reach a status level??

That makes (if you are meaning it's 160SC's for $1983) a price of around $12.40 per SC. That's exceptionally poor value considering you can get them for around $6/SC on JQ without even trying (and even that's very poor considering you can easily get sub $2/SC if you're in the USA).

Typically people look at value in terms of $/SC rather than $/FF point. Either way, it's not good

I agree - not especially good value but if you are trying to reach a SC level ie: go from silver to gold or gold to platinum then I can see your motivation, but thats a fair whack of cash, are you talking VA or QF?

No I cannot make gold by end oct, as need 360 sc for that. I just thought that as i had to go to QLD next week, i could try to boost my ff points by aiming for the next best thing on offer, which is the bonus 8000 points, but yes still need 160sc to make that.

So, any other suggestions on how i could do this....I appreciate all your comments

it's a lot of money to collect some bonus points. I would just book the cheapest seats for the flights required and save the money to put toward a ticket for a holiday later.. if you're looking to book an award seat and need 8000 points, you can buy them from qf for a few hundred dollars..

How many points do you have, could you make an award flight (JASA specifically) instead of just spending cash? I'm guessing if 8000 points is that valuable though, you may not have many points, or be reluctant to spend them. However, aiming for Gold in the future year would be a better option, as you'll earn 75% more on longer routes = more points.

Couldn't you go get a credit card for $100-200 and get 16,000-30,000 QFFPs rather than spend $2,000 to get 17,000 or so??? That lure of 8,000 QFFP seems like lousy value to me if that is the only reason you are doing it, the trip up to Queensland apart etc... I value QFFPs at about 1 cent or so a point in terms of the value i get redeeming them, so i wouldn't be prepared to spend much more than $80 to get 8,000 points, i guess you just need to work out what value you get from them in your personal experience and then see what is a sensible amount of money to spend to earn them....

If you do end up spending more to earn them than what value you will get by redeeming them, Qantas will be rubbing its hands... To me it would be an example that not all bonus offers are worth going out of your way to achieve (its ok if you dont' have to change your behaviour or spend any extra of your hard earned to achieve them), just because it looks like you might be getting something for free, its not always the case but a lot of people fall for it in lots of different types of promotions...

If its too much of a leap to get to gold before the end of Oct probably worth saving some money for a run at it next year via some of the methods others have posted plus the usual JASA approach.

Yes, you are all totally correct. Thank you I needed some perspective on what i would have been spending. So true...just because the carrot is dangled out at you ( bonus 8000 points ) doesn't mean that I must take it.

I will buy the cheapest flight, and as a qc member, can still enjoy the lounge whatever the fare.

The 8000 points sounded good to me as I had just had my first very successful experience of using points for an upgrade hong kong return, and needed to start replenishing my own kitty. However, I also didnt know that if you are a bit short you can buy points from Q. ( thanks for that info sutho58.)

That's cool, these are the little ways of thinking that you learn to help you assess how much value you are getting for your personal circumstances, and everyone can be slightly different...

And you can buy top up points through Qantas, but just remember, that unless urgent or wanting a small amount quickly to reach an award soon, that they still charge a high rate of between 4 cents a point (for 500) through to 2.8 cents (for 20,000, the rate getting slightly cheaper as you buy more) and so there are still many ways out there to gt points for less than that...
