and that my friend is why the measure of a good IT person is not if they are a good person to deal with, or does the small stuff for free. The true measure is what they actually know, and how pro-active they are towards keeping your systems safe and secure.
It takes time, money and unfortunately in this case, significant data loss to discover whether they are good at their job. Much the same for any job, I guess. Whether they are a nice bloke and do the small stuff for free is irrelevant. I've employed several nice people and then "let them go" because they were incompetent. People need to accept responsibility for their actions and if they stuff up, admit to it, fix it and learn from it. Just don't bill me for it!
