Oh well. I can see the main difference :) I wonder why they downgraded the insurance cover on the plat charge card. Must be a lot of claims happening!

Hayden,

did you ask them if they can give you a discount on the new 5k fee and only charge $4300?
I will probably also cancel my Centurion, but might consider staying for $4300.

exp1k

No - our argument was mainly around the lack of relevance to us at this point of time and it was fairly clear from the outset she couldn't convince us to say.

I am fast running out of folks who I have met who have a Centurion card.

THere's no negotiation, but there is a warning that returning to Centurion will cost the annual fee plus a $5K joining fee.

I don't think many people who make the decision to cancel Centurion will ever come back, joining fee or no joining fee. For many people the benefits are just not worth the fee. If they are worth it you don't cancel, if they are not worth it you won't come back.

fair call. all these decisions are based on cost benefits as we see them now.

At least with a $4300 annual fee we could convince ourselves that it was still good value. $5000 can buy a new wardrobe, a few nights at Qualia, a weekend away in Queenstown for example.

I'd be heading for Qualia.......it's just a piece of plastic.

Hi Haydensydney

Just wondering if the Amex rep offered you anything in as an inducement to stay with the card (eg. bonus points etc)?

Cant quite see the merit in a Cent Card for $5k

If you generate a lot of points (say into 7 figures), then a Bank issued Platinum Amex/Visa/Master (say Westpac/ANZ) will more than do the trick as uncapped at 1.5 points on Amex $ spent.

No points dilution like Cent or other Amex issued Platinum cards

Most Bank issued Platinum Amex Cards offer similar services to Amex issued cards for about $300 pa fee which they will generally waive!

You are partially correct here - but Cent still includes significant FREE 'Complimentary Benefits' that bank issued cards do not.

MP Diamond membership for starters - I am currently holding a $500 voucher which I will use at China World Summit Wing in Beijing next visit - Hilton Diamond membership - etc etc - all of which can provide significant $ valkue IF you can use them. If you are not in a position to use these comp features then YES you are correct.

I have always held the view that Cent is priced too high - but after holding one now for 3 years I CAN justify the 5K annual fee - well at least I could before the points earning sctructure changed.

Not at all, mind you we weren't expecting to get drawn into a bargaining conversation - it would just dilute the brand.

Does the diamond HH membership renew itself or do you need to requalify?
