Try and find an internationally configured AC with sky beds. They are there with some searching.

Best advice a few posts back. Take the 3pm

Couldn't agree more.

I used to get the redeye regularly when I was young and silly and working in the Pilbara (mid 90's). I was in Perth for the first time in a long time for work in April, and thought I might as well get it again ... it wasn't so bad I figured.

Despite the fact that I was in J, albeit on one of the 2-3-2 A332's (and all my previous experiences were in Y), I got off the plane in Sydney vowing never again. It's shocker.

Agree its a shocker.

IMHO the flight (like some US red eyes) should take off with lights off, serve no breakfast and maximise the limited amount of sleep.

Instead, takeoff with lights on, snack/drink service, lights off, breakfast on arrival.

not worth it, you never really get a decent sleep

Though I reckon leaving NZ at 5am their time then getting back to Sydney in time for work the same day is almost as bad.

Somewhat off-topic... CX has just started a red-eye SIN-HKG flight, departing SIN at around 1am, arriving HKG at around 5am. (note no timezone differences). It is served by a regional A330, if I'm not mistaken, so, the young, adventurous (and silly) ones should give this a go, in Y.

Hi yngflyer. I've done many red-eyes from PER to SYD and MEL. Unfortunately, only one was in J and that was only after an op-up (one of only two I've ever received with QF). The meal service is called supper rather than dinner although it differs little. It's served as soon as the aircraft's in the air and they can get put the galleys in motion. If you want to maximise sleeping time, I'd aim for the second row probably on the left side, my logic being you're not too close to the galley and your meal should be up quite quickly. There is no breakfast service although I've noticed that on most occasions in Y the crew walk down the aisles offering a bottled juice to passengers. I'd suggest you'd get similar in J.

Unfortunately, while Airbuses do operate a number of the red eyes, from my experience they rarely skybed-equipped. Someone with more knowledge of the seatmaps might be able to post the method of comparing QF's Airbus layouts to determine whether or not skybeds are featured in J. (I believe it has something to do with the front two rows of economy and some seats being missing on some config, I'm not sure.)

I did a SEA-JFK Redeye about 10mths ago. Followed by a full day in New York.

Never again. By 9am I couldn't walk. By 3pm I was falling asleep whenever I sat down.

To top it off, Crowne Plaza NY didn't have my room ready. Thankfully I was upgraded, after an hour past checkin.

PER-SYD red eye may be rough, but try SFO-DFW. Leaves 12:30am, arrives 5:40. flight time just over 3 hours, OMG!

The red eye's are never good, I was silly enough a few months ago to take the first flight SYD-PER then the same day take the red eye home, both via Melbourne to pickup some extra SC's..

NEVER again in the same day..

The red-eye often has the cheapest fares (in Y at least) - but I'll rather pay more to fly at 3pm.

I still remember my university days - $ was tight, and I took quite a few red-eyes.

Wow, the posts on this thread really help to sort the men from the boys. Lightweights the lot of you.

I love the red eye flights ex-PER, specially when in Y. The QP is generally nice and relaxed, with no queues for food or the bar. You can get on board, and nobody disturbs you through the entire flight save the odd irritable child in Zone C.

Buckle up, throw on the eye mask, and as soon as the seatbelt sign is off simply recline a little, steal the pillow from a spare seat next to you - and to use the QF cliche, enjoy the journey (specially if you down a sleeping tablet 1hr before pushback).

I'm normally feeling reasonable upon arrival, and I've normally grabbed my bags and leaving the airport before half of everyone else has made it out.

Of course they'd always be nicer if I could fly them in J, but that's a pipedream for the moment.
