J Class Red-Eye Perth to Sydney

PER-SYD red eye may be rough, but try SFO-DFW. Leaves 12:30am, arrives 5:40. flight time just over 3 hours, OMG!

Sounds awfully similar to PER-MEL ... awful being the operative word! :shock: :shock: :shock:

I love the red eye flights ex-PER, specially when in Y. The QP is generally nice and relaxed, with no queues for food or the bar. You can get on board, and nobody disturbs you through the entire flight save the odd irritable child in Zone C.

Buckle up, throw on the eye mask, and as soon as the seatbelt sign is off simply recline a little, steal the pillow from a spare seat next to you - and to use the QF cliche, enjoy the journey (specially if you down a sleeping tablet 1hr before pushback).

I'm normally feeling reasonable upon arrival, and I've normally grabbed my bags and leaving the airport before half of everyone else has made it out.

Of course they'd always be nicer if I could fly them in J, but that's a pipedream for the moment.

Is there a secret QP in PER I don't know about? ;) I used to take the red-eye PER-SYD every month many years ago, and the QP was always heaving. This was when they used to put 743's on the route, and I was lucky in burning points to upgrade to upper-deck J at various times.

There's no way in hell i'd ever take a red-eye by choice. I was forced to the other month due to an urgent situation that came up back home and I had to fly to PER on a few hours notice, for one day, so had to come home on the red-eye.

The "Supper" they serve can be anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes after take-off. Factor in the time it takes to serve everyone, then collect the empty trays, and turn off the lights, wake everyone for breakfast, and clear the cabin for landing, you can end up with as little as 60 minutes or less shut-eye. If you're the sort of person who can deal with noise around you and doesn't mind wearing an eye mask, you'll be fine. I can't unfortunately, and the rattling keeps me up (not to mention always taking an aisle seat as i'm around 6'4" and don't like being cramped up in a window seat, and then having people wanting to use the loo every 30 minutes).

Oh and every time I tried to buckle up, recline a bit and rest, I was rudely awoke by an FA asking me to put my seat up for meal service.

The flight just isn't long enough to get my mandatory 5 hours of sleep to function for a day. Even with that, it's a struggle.

You must be a much tougher person than most of us, thewinchester ;)

Back in the 60's (1960's you unkind lot) I would regularly holiday in my home town PER and take the red-eye back to MEL. Arrive 5 am, pick up the car and head straight for work. Helped my promotion prospects no end.

Speaking of red-eyes

If you have a relatively early flight in MEL-SYD - the ~3pm flight from PER means an expensive overnight...:oops:

The new CX flight SIN-HKG means they found that people from PER connecting in SIN want to eat dinner in Little India or out at the hawkers before continuing on to HKG :mrgreen:. And QF only connects PER-HKG directly 3 days/week :evil:

Add in the CX flight CMB-SIN as a local red-eye - scheduled for 3hr55min. Then add in the tail winds. At least it does connect to the 0905 to PER :shock:

this is the flight qantas puts you on if you are then doing the sydney-LAX. I have done it several times and both times I swore never again. It means you get maybe 2 hrs sleep at best and for those catching the LAX flight you are already death warmed up before you get on the horror leg. Next time I will be catching the previous day's flight and staying one night in sydney.
 
Yes it is a horror story.I would not do it if they wanted to pay me to do that flight. Go at 3pm!
 
Don't do it to yourself, presumably you need to be functioning at work as well as being there.
 
I'm putting the significant other on the Red Eye PER-SYD on their way to the states next week. I can see that will be the start of a very long and very horrible journey for them. I am of the opinion that any multi flight journey is set by the first of the flights and how that goes. On a recent trip to the States, my 29 hour trip turned in 45 hours with the first flight being a red eye that went wrong, thanks QF for all your help in that situation (not..). I was running on fumes and adrenalin when I got there and was only really partially alive..
 
Done the red eye from per to BNE a few times.My advice avoid it if possible.I did a red eye from SIN to MNL in may and we had a crying baby on board who cried for nearly the entire flight...My worst flight ever...

Which is why we mostly fly via SIN and/or HKG. Total trip slightly longer but far less aggravating. And normally cheaper. But that takes a bit of research. As well as buying the trip to/from PER in Asia.

But people wander on different paths

Absolutely agree. No matter if it's J, there's simply not enough time to get any decent amount of sleep. It's what I call a nuisance flight.

Go the day before and overnight in SYD. Even if you use the el cheapo Formule 1 at SYD (actually one of the best F1s anywhere) as I do, it's far, far better than the red-eye and straight on.
 
At one point about 3 years ago I was doing the red eye every wednesday night in J Per-Syd (usually 743's)and I can tell you they vary according to the other pax on board.

If you get a group of pax who want to sleep it can be ok but if you get a few pax who want to drink and get their money's worth of J flying it ca be hell. The best flights were the ones where no one wanted food and we all jsut got to sleep quickly. Downstairs in the nose was best.

I now take the afternoon flight as it is much better.
