Hi all,

I'm planning a US trip and am interested in finding out whether J Reward Seats and J Flexi Upgrades comes out of the same pool of availability?

I always thought they did but it made no sense to me because a Y Flexi pax would be parting with upwards of $2,200 to buy the flexi fare.

Thoughts?

Don't know about the pool they are taken from, but my firm buys my Y Flexi returns at circa $2,700 and I use points to upgrade to J (when avail - no J avail on my flight next week). No SCs or points on rewards, so that's a factor too.

Yes, they come from the same pool. You do pay the $2,200 or whatever the fare is but you use less than half the points per leg (45k instead of 94k) and as mentioned, get SC and VA points for the Flexi fare. We book Flexi fares for our staff so they can upgrade with personal points if they wish to and I think this is quite common, so many pax didn't pay the original fare themselves.

Would this method be a better way of securing J seats? Rather than trying to find J rewards?

From my understanding they come out of the same pool, so if there is a J reward there is a J upgrade available.

One benefit I do see from the upgrade is the PEY fares are sometime cheaper than the Y Flexi fares and both are eligible for an upgrade. So atleast you have a PEY seat if no award seats open up.

Still 45K to upgrade PE Saver to J. I think PE Flexi is 25K upgrade to J. As you've said, at least if unsuccessful you have PE as a fallback. Once I had PE Flexi and got comped an upgrade to J as they were 'oversold'. We can but hope.
