JAL Fuel Surcharges HND-SYD flight in Feb 2024

I've booked an award to japan already, looking for the return, hence my question can i somehow link the return leg to get the cheaper taxes?
If you want to add the return leg (if you find the award flights you want online) to the already booked award this can only be done on the phone with Qantas. There will likely be a change fee of 5000 points per ticket. The whole thing will need to re-ticketed, potentially risking the flights you already have (see numerous threads on this issue). And as per my experience above that's even if you can find a Qantas call centre operator who knows what they are doing (unless you have status and can get through to Hobart). Ultimately from my personal particular situation I found it easier just to cough up the extra cash. But you may have different cash restraints and therefore a different perspective

Thanks to you and rooflyer,

I think 20,000 points to save $1600 is worth it, happy to lose the flights but i can follow up re ticketing to avoid this. The fist leg was ticketed within 20 mins so hopefully not an issue of JAL flights.

Take a look at cash revenue flights one way back. Its actually shockingly different how much cheaper it can potentially be.

I remember seeing ANA J revenue for around 2.5k return from HND (or 1.7k one way) but 5k+ if you do exSYD instead.

Its the same planes and routes, just priced differently to different markets.

Equally important, could one do a fuel dump to avoid those taxes and fees? For instance, flying Haneda to Sydney then Sydney to Melbourne on a multi-city?

You can, when you find the return leg call up Qantas to add the leg on. It will cost 5,000 points/passenger to do so but that should also result in a repricing of the taxes and fees
I would like to try this but when you say "call up Qantas" I seem to always get call centre staff who are not confident with their knowledge who tell me they will need to "refer to the Rewards team". Is there a particular number I can use to be more likely to get answers?

hadn't thought of this, so you just abandon the return leg?

Looks like i may need to split my booking as there are only 2 seats available in J and 2 in Premium economy,

Would they need to be reticketed if split?

Not even abandoning the return lef, just that the price from Tokyo to Aus is wildly different for the price of Aus to Tokyo.

Just tried to book a reward Y seat HND -> SYD and came across the same issue.

Instead of adding reward to my existing booking as a return leg, could I book a return SYD HND Y reward and call up afterwards to cancel the first leg. Would that be possible?

I wanted to book 2 award F flights oneway from Hnd to Syd....surcharges for 2 pax were over $1000...so I booked a multicity award..Syd-Hkg (stop)- Hnd (stop)-Syd....surchages for 2 pax fior whole trip came to around $600!

not sure, i ended up cancelling the HND ->Syd leg and bought a cheap J ticket instead. When cancelling they re-calculate the taxes for the trip, was very drawn out but it could end up with the same outcome.

Thanks for this. I suspected as much and ended up going ahead with a separate reward booking and paying the higher cash amount.

Didn't want to jeopardise my existing SYD-HND F reward booking!
