Anyone redeemed JAL flights return from Aus-Japan?
J seats are ~$425 in taxes per person. Return would cost minimum $850 and 180k points
Is that still good value in your opinion?

Cheers

I think that's subjective.

In terms of flying Aus - JP, the taxes are indeed exceptionally high and only good value in F imho.
J is definitely decent, but personally I don't think the surcharges are quite worth it. JL J isn't leaps and bounds ahead of other airlines (Qantas included), their Y seats are but not necessarily J.

If you time it right you can probably outright buy ANA J cash for 2800 return. Or just book ANA if you're looking at a non busy season with VFF or any Star Alliance milage program. There tends to be a lot of availability closer to departure so if you have something else booked in that's cancellable, then you can look closer to the date.

180k points would also cover $2700 of a Qantas business fare when booked as a Classic Plus reward (plus $800 = $3500, which could be in the ballpark of a sale fare maybe?)
