Is this still required?

I'm spending 7 hours at HND later this month and was thinking of taking the monorail for a quick trip to the Tokyo tower.

Has anyone had any success in booking flights to Tokyo for Christmas, in economy, at what I’d say is a fair price? I’ve seen Philippine Airlines return Bris to Tokyo for $2600, though you do need to stop in Manila.Qantas isn’t worth considering even though we won’t have platinum perks by going with Phillipine.

In July we paid $2700pp for Syd-Sin-Nrt (Qantas return with 2 days in singapore on the way back) leaving just after christmas... Only seen it go up since then though.

Noting all the commentary about airfares going up, I have been quite pleasantly surprised at still being able to get hotels at fair prices in non-skiing destinations for February. I had a little tick tack with Nagano Snow Shuttles - said how glad I was they were operating and booked my transfers. They replied how glad they were to have tourists to provide transfers for, and thanks for booking. I am really looking forward to my trip.

Great to hear. If we can get fares that don’t cost $7000 each to Tokyo return, thanks Qantas, we will also be non ski visitors looking for hotels or little apartments. Just love travelling in Japan.

I've just been looking at september 23 as we are cruising back to Cairns from Yokohama. so one way SYD-HND is ~ $7500 on QF but ~ $3900 on either JAL or ANA. Sorry AJ you're dreaming.

I'm 100% a morning person, and plan to get up around 6am daily to maximize my exploration time.

While it's fine to wake up early, keep in mind that not all location are good for morning. If you go to shopping heavy area, like Shibuya, then stores only open around 10-11am. Surprisingly, even coffee shops (other than chain) can open surprisingly late. Earlier than that, most attractions open between 9 and 10. Before that, you can mostly walk in streets, visita park and some temple/shrines that either open early or are "always open" (the ground is always accessible, but they have opening hours for the office).

In kinosaki, it's public onsen. Usually you would call it sento when the water is heated, while a onsen the water is from a hot spring. Usually the ryokan will give you a pass to visit all the public onsen in Kinosaki and will lend you a Yukata. Usually, you can check it at 3pm, so getting there much earlier does not especially make sense. I would suggest to go to as many onsen as you can, just soak in one for 10-20 minutes, go out, walk around, get a sack or a dring, go to the next, go eat dinner, go to one more onsen, etc. Next morning wake up, onsen, breakfast, onsen, walk around, onsen... you get the idea. Spend the morning in Kinosaki if you can.

Maid Cafe, I fount it a bit cringe, but you won't know if you don't go. Just search about the know places before as the maid in the street who try to attract you to their cafe may get you to sketchier places. While I did not heard of horror stories as people who followed tout in Kabukicho, I mean, it's still safer to just stick to know good places.

Booked for September 2023 school holidays!

Looking forward to my next Japan trip in May 2023.
Booked SQ first Advantage LAX to NRT (11.30 hours). + 3 night stopover.
To SIN for a 23.30 hour transit and back to SYD.

I have two holidays booked to Japan in 2023… one is a 3 week ski trip to Tomamu and Shiga Kogen with 3 nights in Sapporo for the snow festival and 3 nights in Tokyo. The next is 2 weeks in April/May with family to Honshu and Fukuoka.

Both trips flying JAL - revenue fare PE over and J back. Our daughter and SIL used QF points on JAL PE.

Japan is one of my favourite countries!

Flights are confirmed with Philippines Airlines over Christmas, landing at Haneda.

Now the fun begins, to find some new places, not in the snow, as well as to think about where to spend Christmas and New Year.

All suggestions appreciated, your personal favourites. Our last trip in 2019 was to Kanazawa, Takayama area. Just loved it.

Have you been to Himeji? - the white castle there is beautiful, and has a nice park/garden. It's a university town so has a nice vibe.
Also loved Matsumoto - has a spectacular black castle, a pretty river and is another university town. You can "rent" free bikes from the tourist information centre and cruise around the town.
Another great area to visit is Kamakura and Enoshima (can do as a day trip from Tokyo). The Daibutsu (big Buddha) in Kamakura is lovely, and I really enjoyed a long visit to Enoshima - has temples, spectacular views of the ocean, lots of nice food, hilly walking, when were there in Feb 2020 there was an illumination of the early cherry blossoms.
Also we enjoyed a visit to Nagoya. We went to the Toyota museum/tours - honestly I thought I'd be over that in about 2 hrs, but we stayed for nearly 5 hours learning about the spread of the Toyota company and its history and the Maglev and Shinkansen Museum. It's a nice city, and when we were there (2018) not many other Western tourists.

We also loved Takayama (which we did from Nagoya). We are visiting Kanazawa on our upcoming trip in Feb 23.

Yes to Takayama, Matsumoto, Himeji. Stunning. You will love Kanazawa I know. If I can find details for the sushi shop inside the markets, I’ll send as it was terrific and we were the only tourists having my birthday lunch.

Loved Nikko and Obuse too.

But you’ve got another 3-4 suggestions there so they’re going on the list. Thank you!

and thank you too for offering the details of your fave sushi place. Also open to any suggestions you have for Kanazawa (we have 2-3 days). Plus we are skiing for 2 weeks. I am so so so happy right now....
